ENGLISH QABALAH UNVEILED
by Frater Zarathustra! (Marc S. Cohen) Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. INTRODUCTION The object of this presentation is to deliver a system of English
Qabalah, fulfilling the command in The Book of the Law, Chapter 2, Verse 55:
AL II:55 - "Thou shalt obtain the order & value of the English Alphabet.
Thou shalt find new symbols to attribute them unto." To this end, this system (referred to as "Z.E.Q." for short hereafter)
provides: 1. Gematria (i.e. "order & value" of the English alphabet) Other attributions - such as interfacing with Enochian, and even placing the
50 letters of the Sanskrit Alphabet on the Tree of Life, have been opened up due
to the current method employed in this English Qabalah. However, we shall stick
to these 5 main points today, concentrating mainly on the Elemental & TARO
systems now being offered for practical usage with the English Alphabet. I. Introduction to Qabalah (Hebrew) 1. Qabalah may be defined as the Science and Art of manipulating the
inexhaustible permutations of the concepts "Zero" and "One". 2. The most excellent metaphor, to these ends, is the Tree of Life - which
encodes 10 basic permutations from "Zero" - i.e. the Numbers
("Sephiroth") One through Ten. These 10 permutations are connected by 22
hieroglyphic strings of data - or, the Hebrew Alphabet. All phenomena so-ever
may be referred to and the processing thereof illumined by this basic program of
32 variables. 3. Linguistically, Qabalah may be used as a cipher method, equating letters
& words with number. For instance, the Hebrew word for "Love",
{Aleph-Hey-Beth-Heh} , equals 13, as does the Hebrew {Aleph-Cheth-Daleth} ,
"Unity". Thus, we may profitably meditate on the identity between "Love" and
"Unity". When added together, "Love" and "Unity", in Hebrew, gives us 26 - or
{Yod-Hey-Vuv-Hey} - Tetragrammaton - the central formulae of the Hebrew Qabalah.
II. The Need for an English Qabalah 1. The Book of the Law charges us to tackle this need explicitly, in Chapter
2, Verse 55, as already quoted. 2. Hebrew has but 22 letters, meaning that ambiguous and ultimately arbitrary
transliterations result when interfacing with the 26 lettered English Alphabet.
For example: AIWASS is the spelling of the deliverer of Liber AL,
according to the Book itself. This may be transliterated into Hebrew as: AIWASS = 78 (transliterated as AIVAS) (# of the TARO, {Mem-Zayin-Lamed-Aleph},
etc.) AIWASS = 93 (transliterated as OIVZ ) (qelhma, agaph, etc.) or, most literally: AIWASS = 138 (transliterated as AIWASS) ... or several other transliterations, as well. Such ambiguity is part of the beauty of Hebrew; yet Gematria loses its
scientific rigidity and falls into free form mastur/manipul - ation when
transliterating into English. Absurdities such as an 'X' being used to
transliterate a {Tsaddi}, with a 'Ts' sound like 'Tsar') are common - again due
to discrepancies between 22 term Hebrew and 26 term English alphabets. III. The Method of "Order & Value" 1. Our first difficulty is that of fitting 26 terms (the English alphabet)
with a system of 22 (Hebrew Alphabet) and 32 ("Paths of Wisdom", being the 22
Hebrew letters + the 10 Sephiroth). The resolution to this math will be given in
the next section. 2. To generate a Qabalah readily capable of interfacing with Hebrew, Greek,
and Arabic, we must use a Base 10 numbering system. However, our final letters
in this order (which, like Greek, goes to 800 with 26 terms) must be
comparatively rare. If a common letter, such as 'e' or 's' is valued at 800, we shall lose our aesthetic
approach to interfacing with these other great systems when it comes to
comparative calculations (Gematria). 3. So, we look to Liber AL itself. We are told in: AL II:54 - "the letters? change them not in style or value!" "change them not in style" - no Sanskrit or Enochian, but the English
Alphabet itself, as verse II:55 states explicitly. "or value!" - i.e. , we retain a Base 10 math for our Gematria. 4. The Book of the Law, as the first Book of the New Aeon, was written down
in English. The letters that appeared in it, and their order, literally created
a new Universe, quite similar to the concepts employed in the old Zoharic
Qabalistic interpretations of the Hebrew letters. Thus, let us chart the first
appearance of each letter of the English alphabet to appear in Liber AL.
Crossing out duplicates as we go, we obtain: |

5. Most importantly, this code - or
any English Qabalah code - can not be
found in the text of either Chapter II or Chapter III of Liber AL -
for therein is no letter Z anywhere but in Chapter I !
6. First note that it takes the first 27 (or 3 cubed) versus of AL for the Order (and hence value) of the English Alphabet to unfold. We will return to the importance of this fact later. 7. Note these key values through the Z.E.Q. code: NOT = 31 ; the same value as the Hebrew "Not" - Lamed-Aleph ("LA"); as well as "God" - Aleph-Lamed("AL") - this latter being a key title of The Book of the Law. AL III:39 - "... for in it is the word secret & not only in the English" (emphasis added) ABRAHADABRA = 814 (Or 418 backwards, a Thrashraq.) BAPHOMET = 418 "in whiter words" = 666 And now, for a more thorough proof: (Please see Table 2639, also numbered "Table 3" in the handouts). TABLE 2639 (Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law)= 1542 (1542 = ShMN MShChTh QRSh "Oil of Annointing") + (Love is the law, love under will) = 963 (963 = {Aleph-Cheth-Daleth}, which = 13, "Unity", when spelled in full) + (Thirteen) = 134 (the number "13" spelled in full) Sum of 1542+963+134 = 2639 2639 = ZERO = 725 Sum of these 13 words = 2639 We add the value of "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" to its corollary, "Love is the law, love under will" (this latter being equivalent to Aleph-Cheth-Daleth, 13, Unity, spelled in full, being 963), and then add the English "thirteen" (the number 13, spelled in full), and obtain 2639. (1542+963+134=2639) This 2639 is equal, exactly, to the sum of the first 13 whole numbers, spelled in full (Zero through Twelve). Here, we not only have the cipher 13/31, but: 26 _________________________________39 # of letters in English _____________Thrashraq of 93 Thrashraq of 62, the value 26 + 39 = 65 = {Aleph-Daleth-Nun-Yod} ("Adonai") Also, by AIQ BaKiR, 2639= 2+6+3+9 = 20 = O (11th new letter in AL; pictorially resembles Zero (0); O is also the first letter of the Elemental system to be addressed shortly). 20 + 11 = 31 = NOT, {Lamed-Aleph}, {Aleph-Lamed}, etc. Mathematically, 2:6 3:9 expresses ratios of 1:3 1:3 (again, 13/31) More than some fancy Gematria, Table 2639 demonstrates the exactitude of our cipher better than any attempt at an English Qabalah known to me; and the source of this cipher is the text of Liber AL itself, from the only chapter that contains the whole alphabet. III. English Tree of Life (Please examine Table 4, "The English Tree of Life"). With our 26 term-alphabet, we break it up thusly: place the first 10 English letters of our new order upon the 10 Sephiroth of the Tree of Life; retain the 22 Paths as the Hebrew letters; "they have the half", "even as the 10 in the 22 directions", etc. The remaining 16 (or 4 squared) English letters will form the Elemental & Sub-Elemental system, which will be discussed in the next section. The symbolism of these 10 Sephirothic English letters I have discussed elsewhere (see my, "The English Qabalah and the Tree of Life", 1996 e.v.). Simply note that (compare with Table 1, "The Hebrew Tree of Life") here in Binah we have the 3rd letter in our order, D. the Hebrew D, Daleth, connects it to Chokmah, i.e. to the right, horizontally. Now look at Chesed - where is placed our 4th letter, T; to its left, horizontally, is indeed the Hebrew T, Teth, which connects Chesed with Geburah. The third and final horizontal Path (p), Pey, has its center directly over the 9th English letter/Sephiroth, F, in Yesod. Note that the Hebrew Pey is also the Hebrew F (Fey); they are each valued at 80, the only difference being that a 'dot' ("dagesh") is drawn in the midst of the Fey when it is a Pey. We thus have all 3 horizontal Paths bearing a corresponding, symmetrical relationship between English and Hebrew attributions. (i.e. twin English/Hebrew letters to the right horizontal, left horizontal, and vertically/centered to horizontal, Paths - mimicking the left, right, and middle pillar framework of the Tree of Life itself). Also, note the sum of these horizontal twin letters in English: D (3) + T (4) + F (9) = 16. (In Hebrew, they equal 93, as d + f + p) IV. The Elemental System Now we have the remaining 16 letters of the English alphabet. We group them in 4 rows by 4 columns, in order, thusly: (cf. "The Table of 16", being Table 5) TABLE OF 16 (Key: Rows = Suits: Wands=Fire; Cups=Water; Swords=Air;
Disks=Earth |
Knight | Queen | Prince | Prcss
Wands | O | U | V | L |
Cups | G | C | P | Y |
Swords | R | W | B | K |
Disks | J | Z | X | Q |
We now have an entire system of elemental & sub-elemental letters, as well as the 16 TARO court cards. For instance, the Prince of Disks is X (Air of Earth). The suit of Disks would be (JZXQ). Note that each suit is itself a Tetragrammaton. Now - note that there are really 10 Tetragrammatons in the Table of 16 Elemental letters. (4 horizontally, 4 vertically, and the 2 diagonals, OCBQ and JWPL). The number 10 spelled in full, TEN, = 16. TABLE OF 40 (Please see Table VI, "The Tablet of 40") Our 10 Tetragrammatons yield us a new Elemental Table, whereon we shall chart them, writing all 10 Tetragrammatons horizontally. We now have a 4 * 10 setup, so we will make the 4 Elements/Suits our 4 Columns, and the 10 Rows correspond to the 10 Sephiroth (Ace through Ten as the 40 small cards of the TARO). THE TABLET OF 40 |

WANDS | CUPS | SWORDS | DISKS |
Ace | O | C | B | Q |
2 | O | U | V | L |
3 | G | C | P | Y |
6 | R | W | B | K |
9 | J | Z | X | Q |
4 | O | G | R | J |
5 | U | C | W | Z |
8 | V | P | B | X |
7 | L | Y | K | Q |
10 | J | W | P | L |
You will notice that our order does not follow Ace through Ten. This is due to the original elemental correspondences of our Table of 16, and the twist thrown in from their mirror (vertical) images as Tetragrammatical suits. Also, the Tree of Life is not completely symmetrical, in that the middle pillar is dominated by Air. But we shall use the logic and patterns of reversal to effect symmetry. Note that the first and last rows are the 2 diagonal Tetragrammatons from the Table of 16 (OCBQ = 4 Aces, JWPL = 4 Tens). The rest of the table is simply the Table of 16 as the 4 rows under OCBQ, and its mirror, the 'averse' Table of 16 (i.e. the vertical Tetragrammatons from the Table of 16 now drawn horizontally) as the 4 rows above JWPL (beginning with OGRJ and ending with LYKQ). We label the first row (OCBQ) under Kether, and the 4 Aces, being the left diagonal Tetragrammaton. We shall correspond this suit, being Fire of Fire (O), Water of Water ( C ), Air of Air (B), Earth of Earth (Q), to Spirit. (Remember, these attributions are Elemental, and hence merely Yetziratic, in nature). The second row (OUVL) is the suit of Fire (Chokmah) - the 4 Two's. The third row (GCPY) is the suit of Water (Binah) - the 4 Three's. The fourth row (RWBK) is the suit of Air (Tiphareth); thus the 4th row is really attributed to the 4 Sixes. The 5th row (JZXQ) was Malkuth in the Table of 16; but whereas JWPL (the right diagonal Tetragrammaton in the Table of 16) is the natural Malkuth to counter OCBQ (left diagonal Tetragrammaton in the Table of 16) as Kether, JZXQ now heralds Yesod - and hence represents the 4 Nines. The mystery of the interplay of 9 (the foundation of 10) & 10 is central to the Sephir Yetzirah, as well as the Elemental (Yetziratic) system of this English Qabalah. The 6th row (OGRJ) is the 4 Knights, as well as the first mirror (vertical Tetragrammaton) of elemental suits from the Table of 16. It thus swaps (mirrors) the fire of OUVL/Chokmah as the Water of Chesed - yet masculine water. It is thus also the 4 Four's. The 7th row (UCWZ), the 4 Queens, is likewise a mirror of the suit of Water (GCPY); as such, it mirrors the Water of Binah through the Fire - feminine fire - of Geburah. It is thus also the 4 five's. The 8th row (VPBX) is the 4 Princes, mirroring the suit of Air (RWBK) on the Table of 16; continuing the mirroring of the left and right pillar Sephiroth below the Abyss, VPBX, as the 4 'Air of' letters, becomes its Supernal opposite (Water) - or Hod, the 4 Eights. (Which planetary ruler, Mercury, is masculine). The 9th row (LYKQ) is the 4 Princesses, mirroring the suit of Earth (JZXQ) on the Table of 16; and thus assumes its supernal opposite (Fire), or Netzach, being the 4 Sevens. (Which planetary ruler, Venus, is feminine). The 10th row (JWPL) - being Fire of Earth (J), Water of Air (W), Air of Water (P), Earth of Fire (L), as mentioned, mirrors OCBQ (being Fire of Fire, Water of Water, Air of Air, Earth of Earth; and the left diagonal Tetragrammaton on the Table of 16, whereas JWPL is the right diagonal Tetragrammaton), and as such is under Malkuth - the 4 Tens. Using the Tablet of 40 First, we differentiate the complex make-up of this Tablet by connecting the 2 diagonal Tetragrammatons on the Table of 16, with 2 diagonal lines, forming an 'X'. We then connect these 2 diagonal Tetragrammatons on the Averse Table of 16 (corresponding to the 4 Four, Five, Eight, and Sevens), which are the same suits averse as upright (OCBQ and JWPL), forming another 'X'. Lastly, we connect Kether to Malkuth, i.e. a diagonal line from the bottom left corner of 'J' in the last (Tens) row, to the uppermost right corner of 'Q' in Kether (OCBQ, Row One/Aces); and of course, then from the bottom right ('L' of JWPL) to the top left ('O' of OCBQ), forming a third 'X'. Stir for a few minutes, turn 90 degrees, and ... |

... the Unicursal Hexagram! (On-line Note: You will have to draw the lines as explained above, and then turn the paper 90 degrees, and you will see the Unicursal Hexagram). This was discovered quite by accident. Now, to invoke the intelligence of, say, the 6 of Swords, you may either do so in a linear manner (BVPB) or by using the letters appropriate to Ace, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six (BVPRWB, in this case). Pronunciation of these intelligences may be considered to follow typical Enochian usage, simply due to their barbarous nature. Note that the suits from the Table of 16 (OUVL, GCPY, RWBK, JZXQ) correspond to 2 (Chokmah), 3 (Binah), 6 (Tiphareth), 9 (Yesod) respectively. 2369 is itself a permutation of 2639 - the chief numerical proof to the Z.E.Q.! (See Table 2639). This, too, was discovered accidentally.V. The TARO and the 32 Paths Please reference Table 8 You will by now have noticed our TARO: 22 Trumps = The Hebrew Alphabet We may also correspond our English formulae to all 32 Paths (see Table 8). Paths 1-10, the first 10 (Sephirothic) letters, H through
S; (O=11, U=12,V=13 ?Q=26)
Note these patterns compared to Hebrew: |
Path | Hebrew Ruler | English Ruler | Comparison
27 | Mars (Fire) | Fire | Identity
28 | Aquarius (Air) | Water | Supernal Opposite
29 | Pisces (Water) | Air | Supernal Opposite
30 | Sol (Planet) | Luna (Planet) | Opposite

32 (bis) | Tav (Earth) | Earth | Identity |
3 identities and 3 "opposites" (though Luna and Sol in Path 30 each represent "air" elementally) in these extra 6 Paths, 27-32. These analogies for Paths 27-32 should only be taken as suggestive and partial at best. You will also notice that, whereas the Hebrew Tree and TARO attribute the Knights to Chokmah, Queens to Binah, Princes to Tiphareth, and Princesses to Malkuth (2,3,6,10), the Z.E.Q. attributes them to the Yetziratic Sephiroth Chesed, Geburah, Hod, Netzach, respectively. (4,5,8,7). This is the necessary symmetry of mirroring found in the Table of 16, originally. This, again, emphasizes the Yetziratic nature of the Z.E.Q. elemental system. For instance, note the Hebrew Court Card Sephirothic sum (2+3+6+10 =21 = Aleph-Hey-Yod-Hey, God-Name of Kether in assiah, as well as 21 = (Sigma 6). Whereas the Z.E.Q. Court Card Sephirothic sum is 4+5+8+7 = 24 = 4*3*2*1 (i.e. the maximum permutations of 4 elements); together, they are 21 + 24 = 45 = (Sigma 9). You will have noticed that 9 (Yesod) was the only Sephiroth, save Kether, previously left out of the Hebrew/English Court Card scheme. This is why Chokmah and Binah, the Supernal Fire and Water, were used in our Tablet of 40 colour scheme, for Geburah and Chesed (traditional Red and Blue) are already doing court card duty in the reversal symmetry process; and in keeping with the reversal process, the feminine fire (Red, Mars, Geburah, the 4 Queens) was the colour code for Chokmah, while the masculine water (Blue, Jupiter, Chesed, the 4 Knights) was the colour code for Binah. With regards the ?32 English Paths?, I find it more profitable to keep the 22 Trumps as the Hebrew Alphabet, with their English correspondences (Elemental Paths 11-32) as subordinate intelligences to the Hebrew. Nonetheless, one ignorant of Hebrew may now operate a workable 32 Paths (and TARO) solely with English formulae. (i.e. Paths 11-32 would serve as Trumps 0-21; for instance, Path 11, O, would represent Atu 0) It should be added that, having placed the first 10 letters upon the Sephiroth, the 16 elemental letters (Paths 11-26) are all multiples (by 10 or 100) of the sum of the Path number. This can only occur when Path 11=20 (2*10=20), and the Base 10 continues. This adds our final evidence to the propriety of splitting the English Alphabet into 10 (Sephiroth) and 16 (Elemental system). The Tablet of 40 (small cards) Colour Code Please reference the Tablet of 40, Colour Code (Table 7). 1. Colour OCBQ white for Kether (Spirit), and JWPL black for
Malkuth (Earth). To examine these protrusions, we shall value each red square 2,
for Chokmah as Supernal Fire; each blue square 3 for Binah as
Supernal Water; each yellow square 6, for Tiphareth as Air; each
silver Square 9, for Yesod; each white square 1, for Kether; and
each black square 10, for Earth as Malkuth. (J) Black (10) - (L) Red (2) - (comes out on the top right at)
(L) Red (2) - (Q) White (1) = 15 = (Sigma)5 (i.e. the sum of
1+2+3+4+5); cf. The 5 elements. 6. Now go to the bottom right angle: (L) Black (10) - (Q) Silver (9) - (comes out to top left at) (O)
Red (2) - (O) White (1) = 22 (cf. The Hebrew Alphabet) Add step 5 (15)+ step 6 (22) = 37 = NU = 10 = 1 = h d y j y
("YChIDH" in Hebrew) 7. Now note the Central Square of the Tablet of 40: Z (Silver, 9) + X (Silver, 9) +G (Blue, 3) + R (Yellow, 6) = 27 (the number of versus in Liber AL for the Z.E.Q. Order & value to unfold); also 3 cubed. 8. Central Square (Table of 16, Upright) + Central Square (Table of 16, Averse): Upright: C (Blue, 3) + P (Blue, 3) + W (Yellow, 6) + B (Yellow, 6) = 18 (18=2 *9; also 6+6+6) Of course, the Averse Central Square is composed of the same letters, and is also, by colour code, 18. Thus, the Upright & Averse Central Squares, by colour code, = 36, of which 666 is the mystic number (i.e. 'Sigma' 36= 666) 9. Note the common keys 9, 18, 27, 36 10. Interestingly, by Gematria: RED = 108 = MAGUS = (2 squared) * (3 cubed); or 4 * 27 N (7) IF S (10) (N, I, F, S are the 7th thru 10th letters to appear in AL, and valued as such; see Table II, "The Order & Value of the English Alphabet"). WHITE + BLACK =1040; the 10 Tetragrammatons and 40 letters
therefrom; 10 * 9 = 90 = 9+18+27+36 (cf. Step 9 above) 14. Further on this pivotal JZXQ: JZ XQ 15. English Usage: English generally requires a "u" to follow a "Q", as any Scrabble player knows. Interestingly, QU = 830, which = (Sigma 40 = 820) + 10; again, the 10 and the 40; or "WHITE + BLACK" = 1040; or (Sigma 40) + (Sigma 4); note that 40 is the number of letters obtained from the 16 Elemental English Letters, and 4 is the square root of 16). 16. Recall Step 5, where, by colour code, the bottom left to top right Unicursal Hexagram protrusions = 15 (Sigma 5); adding all Unicursal Hexagram protrusions (LLLQ + JQOO) to the Grand Central Square (ZXGR), by Gematria,= 3750 =15 = (Sigma 5); or, the 5 Elements as including the Grand Central Square as the 5th point to the 4 directional extrusions. The Grand Central Square itself (ZXGR)= 1460 = 11, the number of Magick. VI. ENGLISH QABALAH OF 9 CHAMBERS (Please reference Table 1) You will have noticed that Da'ath - the "invisible Sephirah" - has thusfar been ignored. Frater 999 added the Ampersand ("&") to this system, as the 27th 'variable' to the 26 letter English Alphabet. He showed me a book detailing the history of the English Alphabet, which included the Ampersand with the 26 letters, giving historical validity to his inspiration: (ALPHABET: The History, Evolution, and Design of the Letters We Use Today; by Allen Haley; ISBN 0-8230-0170-9; c. 1995 e.v.) Utilizing the Ampersand as Da'ath makes sense, as Ampersand is not really a letter and Da'ath is not really a Sephirah. Indeed, even its shape (&) resembles the Great Serpent/Dragon itself. But moreover, this gives us 27 terms - the same number of versus with which it takes the Z.E.Q. to unfold the order & value, from Chapter I of Liber AL itself! Although the ampersand first appears in verse six (SIX= 718, cf. "Abomination of Desolation" referred to in AL), since it is not a letter proper, we reserve the right to put it at the end of the English Alphabet; as such, this 27th term will equal 900, allowing an English Qabalah of 9 Chambers. The use of a 27 (or 3 cubed) term Alphabet opens up many new possibilities, and shows the English Alphabet itself mimicking the dynamics of the interchange of 9/10 already discussed, giving us a 26/27 dynamic as well. Frater 999 has done much work with the Ampersand, and I mention his addition here chiefly to show the Qabalah of 9 Chambers that it allows. Those who feel uncomfortable with this exception to our Order & Value scheme may use 'H', which also represents Kether, being the 1st letter to appear in AL, as Da'ath - for H is also the first repeated letter in AL; or, the first duality, mimicking the first letter itself. Yet you will not have a Qabalah of 9 Chambers unless you utilize a 27th term, of which the Ampersand, which appears in The Book of the Law, is the historically most obvious choice. VII. Conclusion Beyond establishing the order & value of the English Alphabet as revealed by Liber AL itself, it is hoped that this presentation will facilitate the utilization of the English language as a medium for works of practical magick. The Elemental, TARO, and Key Scale attributions revealed herein, are all based on a rigid, mathematical formulae (order and value) embedded in the first 27 verses of the first chapter of The Book of the Law. Whether one considers the Z.E.Q. the "English Qabalah Unveiled" or not, it is hoped that this contribution to Occult Science will help facilitate the construction of practical egregores utilizing the English Alphabet and the principles which it conveys in the Book of the Law. There is much that was not presented, such as over-doses of Gematria compilations, but I feel that the essence of this system has been given adequate exposure for practical workings by those so inclined. I would like to thank Frater 999 for his work with me, without which my understanding of this system would have remained stunted. Thank you for your perseverance through this long, low-budget presentation. The Z.E.Q. is a work-in-progress. The preceeding is merely the notes from a lecture on the Z.E.Q. that I gave in Tampa, FLA. A complete treatise on the Z.E.Q. will be written soon. Love is the law, love under will. Marc S.
