My Car!
coming soon! big stinkin' pictures of my Scooby!
I haven't been driving as long as most of the people on the road since
I started driving late. For money or whatever reasons I had I didn't start
driving until I was 18. Where I live we can get our drivers licenses at
age 16. I started out driving my family's 1991 Ford F-250 pickup truck
and kept with that until I moved up to UND in the summer of 1998. I liked
the truck because it was huge, so I felt pretty safe as a beginner driver
(much to the worry of other drivers on the road). It was also a completely
different vehicle than most of my other friends were driving at the time
so I could haul around most of the equipment Moral
Hazard had to move for concerts and whatnot. After living without transportation
at UND for a semester I started thinking about buying a car. First I needed
a job but couldn't get one until I was done with school for the semester.
That was solved when I got my job at Mesaba. I had been looking at a few
different cars that were in (although not really) in my price range. The
list of cars was as follows, in order of preference (with pros and cons
I came up with):
-
1991-1995 Dodge Stealth R/T
-
+: hot-looking American sports car, twin-turbo 276hp V6 engine, Mopar,
6-speed manual, 18" tyres
-
-: high insurance rates, inneficient gas consumption, overall pricing
-
1996-1998 Subaru Impreza
-
+: viscuous-differential all-wheel drive technology, boxer 4 engine, bred
from world rally championship cars
-
-: not the hottest-looking automobile, American-spec Imprezas are non-turbocharged
-
1997-1999 Honda Prelude VTEC or Acura Integra Type R
-
+: pretty good-looking Japanese sedan, not a Civic, 195hp front-wheel drive
sports car, easy as hell to tune
-
-: easy as hell to tune (not a typo), everyone gets into Honda and Acura
and I want to be better
-
1990-1994 Jaguar XJS
-
+: one of the ultimate luxury sedans, V12 engine, English styling
-
-: eats gas faster than you can torch it, high repair costs
I found some good competitors in all 4 cars but ended up buying a 1996
Subaru Impreza L 4-door sedan. I am partial to 4-door cars because I like
going out with friends and don't want them sitting uncomfortably in the
back seat. Besides, with how much dirt-driving I like to do with it they'll
need their own door to bail out of. I'm already starting to make modifications
to my car. First thing that had to go was the hubcaps. Fortunately one
of the hubs knew its number was up and escaped on the freeway, thus beginning
my search for rims. I have a decent set on now that compliment the car
and make it look a little more like the WRC. I also have tuned the intake
and exhaust system to get the horsepower up. My car runs about 144hp stock,
but last time I had it on a dyno it was putting out up to 183hp. Next up
on my list are a rear wing spoiler, front lip spoiler, an intake scoop
on the hood, Eibach suspension, 17" Pirelli tyres, and the coup de grace
a HKS twin-turbocharger. This will all come someday down the road when
I'm done with school and paying to fly. For now I love my car. I love driving
it and I miss it when I'm away for too long. It's an excellent car and
well worth looking into yourself. Once you drive an all-wheel drive car
you'll never want to go back to anything else.
Hopefully I'll be getting some pictures of my car up once I get it back
from the body shop. It had some damage on the front of it and will be back
to normal in no time. I'll get them up as soon as I can on this page.
