30 women responded to this survey. Disclaimer: This is only an informal survey of 30 women from the Intradesign Myomectomy Forum. No medical advice is given, or should be implied. Results of this survey are posted only for informational purposes.
Question 1 - How Old Are You?
Of the 30 that responded, 28 gave their current age. The average age of those that responded was 35. Of the 30 that responded, 16 gave the age at which they were first diagnosed - that average age was 30.
Question 2 - What Race Are You?
30 responded to their race: 24 white, 6 black, 1 hispanic.
Question 3 - Did Your Mother Have Fibroids?
14 no, 13 yes, 3 unknowns (based on not knowing their mother), and 1 did not respond.
Question 4 - Did/Do Any Of Your Female Siblings Have Fibroids?
14 no, 3 yes, 12 not applicable (no sisters), and 2 did not respond.
Question 5 - Did/Do You Have Many Small Fibroids, Or A Few Large Fibroids?
I found that I could not evaluate this particular question well for several reasons - my question was fairly ambiguous, I did not provide a reasonable means of evaluation such as "how many, their locations, their size in cm, etc.", and some respondents do not know the actual size and location of their fibroids making the question too general. I apologize for not giving a better evaluation, but as stated above, this is a very non-scientific survey :-)
Question 6 - Would You Be Considered Overweight?
Once again, not a particularly well worded question because it is very subjective, but... 13 no, 16 yes, and 2 did not respond. Of those that responded with information about "By How Much?", the scale applies as follows:
Not overweight - 13
1-10 lbs. - 1
10-20 lbs. - 4
30-50 lbs. - 6
60-70 lbs. - 2
Unknown - 3
No answer - 2
Question 7 - Did You Take Birth Control Pills Before Your Fibroid Diagnosis - If Yes, How Long?
3 no, 22 yes, and 6 did not respond. As for the amount of time on BCP, the results are as follows:
0-1 year = 6
2-5 years = 3
6-10 years = 7
11-15 years = 6
Did not give "How Long" = 8
Of those that responded yes and gave an answer of how long, the average number of years on BCP equals 6.83 years.
So, there are the results of this survey. Because I did no formal research, I don't feel I can judge the results, but one thing seems interesting - an overwhelming majority of us took birth control pills.
