Ekaterina recalls having a very happy childhood, growing up with her mother, a teletype operator, and her father, a former dancer with the famous Moiseyev Dance Troupe. Katia, or Katuuh, was born on 28 May 1971, in Moscow, Russia. She is the daughter of Alexander Alexeyevich Gordeev and Elena Levovna Gordeeva. She also has a sister, Maria.
Katia began skating at age 4, with the Central Red Army Club, the biggest and most prestigious sports club in the former Soviet Union. She skated singles until age 11, when she was paired up with Sergei.

Sergei Mikhailovich Grinkov

Sergei's childhood, according to Katia, wasn't as happy-go-lucky as her own. He was the son of two police officers, who often didn't get to spend time with little Sergei because of work. Sergei, or Serioque, was born on 4 February 1967, in Moscow, Russia. He was the son of Mikhail Kondrateyevich Grinkov and Anna Filipovna Grinkova. He has a sister, eight years his elder, named Natalia.
Katia says that Sergei was a non-conformist, and that he despised hypocrisy. As a boy, he liked to play all sports: tennis, soccer, hockey, and liked to play with toy soldiers.
Katia recalls that Sergei, like herself, wasn't a very strong jumper, which was the reason he (and she) were encouraged into pair skating. She also notes that, "He was very tiny, very small when he first started to skate. But coach knew if we gave him time, he'll be okay." Sergei skated as a singles skater also, until he was 15, and paired up with Ekaterina.
Sergei passed away suddenly on November 20, 1995, at a routine practice session in Lake Placid, NY.
The Wedding
Katoosha and Seriozha, as they were known to each other, were wed on April 20, 1991 (official, state-approved wedding), and then again in the church on 28 April 1991. The wedding took place in Moscow, Russia, and was conducted by Father Nikolai of the Russian Orthodox Church.
