I urge you to hear Kissin's version of the Paganini variations, they are great. So is the Franck Prelude, choral and fugue, on the same record. You should consider reviewing it.

Following on your very positive comments on Idil Biret (in the Andnes site) you may want to include her in your featured artists. While not known to many, she is a far greater artist than most pianists today - and none can match her on the depth, breadth
nd authority on a vast repertory.

Comments:
Hi,
Thank you for surfing my homepage and signing the guestbook. You suggested me to get Argerich's Kinderznen and Ravel Pno Cto. Well, I have both, but I haven't listened to them for a looooooong time. I agree she has made a number of good recordings. Fo instance, her Chopin Polonaise No.6 is definitely better than Horowitz's "off the scale" versions, or Ashkenazy's academic recording, or Pollini's "copy-cat" style (he copied from Rubinstein), etc. And her Chopin Etude No.1 made live at the Chopin compe ition is very good too. But what makes me sick is that her most famous recording, her Rach3, is in my opinion a disgusting performance. In fact, Horowitz's recordings of Tchaikovsky #1 are bad too. They are vulgar, too showy, too loud, not musical, yet hey are loved by so many people. I am a super Horowitz fan, but even I can't stand this.
It's interesting that we are exchanging musical thoughts by signing each other's guestbook!

Comments:
Great site! I have around 1,400 CDs but out of the top of my head, I can think of Mutter's Carmen Fantasy to recommend. Mutter is so beautiful! If you have some free time, come visit my site too!
I find it a pity that many people today like a pianist just because s/he plays loud and/or fast. Argerich is so popular today mainly because of her wild tempi and banging. But few people seem to care about her serious lack of discipline and intellect. S me for Wild's recordings of the Rachmaninoff concertos. They are literally wild, but just for show and cheap. But because they are wild, the "Grammophone Good CD Guide" gives them the highest grade, despite their being musically inferior. Oh, BTW, I found your site at Classical Insite.

I came across your homepage about Martha Argerich, my all time favorite pianist and I would like to share my ideas, thoughts about the artist with you. I hope I can make some friends who love Argerich. I am sure you are one of them since you put her bio
in your homepage.
I started to love Argerich three years ago when I bought her CD. It is Tchaikovsky’s No. 1 and Rachmaninov No. 3 live recording. I am sure every fan of hers owns this CD. When I first heard her Rach 3, I was stunned and amazed how she interpreted the m
sic. Every note is crystal clear. Her passion, motion and emotion captured my soul all the way. From that time on, I have tried my best to collect her CDs.
Last summer, I read the brochure of Carnegie Hall and realized that Argerich would have a concert in NY. I got the ticket right on the date of sale (Sept 8, 98) for her Oct 24 concert in Carnegie Hall, NY. I live in Rochester, NY which is about 6 hours
riving from NYC. I went there by overnight bus on Friday midnight. In fact I just got back from NY yesterday and I would really like to share my experience with you.
She played Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.1 with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Charles Dutoit . My heart was pounding before she stepped into the stage. I was lucky enough to sit on the forth row right in the middle. Finally, the pian
st, dressed in black silky gown with oriental embossing, came out with a smile. She appeared to be quite shy and a little nervous. Once she sat on the piano chair in front of the Steinway D, she adjusted the height a couple times. She took several deep
breaths and rubbed her hands. Perhaps any musician who performs at Carnegie Hall gets nervous. In the first movement, she hit the first few chords with power and played the scales in great speed and in absolute clarity. Then my heart and my soul had be
n taken by her. In the theme, the “Chopin-style” melody came up very subtle. I felt so light and weightless. I was floating up and down like a feather. The second movement touched my heart and I almost cried. The melody of the second movement is extr
mely well written – very much like Chopin’s Nocturnes. She played every note in caution and the piano tone sounded well balanced with the orchestra. Because Carnegie Hall is well designed, no matter how light the tone sound, you can hear it everywhere.
The third movement was very dynamic. Her speed was faster than Rubinstein’s RCA recording. She sang along while she played. I could hear the music from her facial expressions.
The concert ended with a standing ovation. Everyone clapped their hand as loud as they could. After she came back from the back stage the fifth time, the crowd won’t let her go and kept clapping in a rhythm. She looked quite embarrassed and expressed t
at she had nothing to play for encore. Seventh time she came out (SEVENTH TIME!!!) and she begged the first violinist to go to the back stage with her so that she could end the passion of the crowd. I was a bit disappointed that she was so determined.
ould she play an encore? I had high hope. The eighth time she seemed very puzzled – why are you still standing up and clapping?? She asked the first violinist to go back with her. And he did. Finally, we all disappointed. Why would she so determine
ot playing encore at all? I went to the back stage in the intermission. People were waiting to see her. I prepared several CD booklets and hoped that she could sign them for me. However, the stage manager told us that she would see nobody. I kept wai
ing there but without any luck at all. I started talked to other people around me. Then I heard a girl talked to the stage manager, “Even her daughter can’t see her?” – I turned around and saw a young girl who looked exactly like Argerich – except she w
s much younger. Oh, my God! She was her daughter for sure. Her name is Linda. She can speak perfect English. I wonder if she lives in the States… I asked her, but she said no. I asked her why her Mom would not see anybody. She said she was in bad m
od today… Bad mood?
I met man who came all the way from Venezuela. Venezuela! He came all the way from S. America to see her!
No luck at all – I could not meet Argerich.
What a concert! I have never seen any concert ending in such standing ovation. I wish I could hear her live again next year in NYC or somewhere in the world. She is on the top of my list among other pianists.
Please do email me and share your thoughts with me. If you have seen Argerich live, please let me know and tell me all about it. I will be waiting for your reply. I am thinking of creating a web site called www.argerich.net which is dedicated to her.

I mostly agree with your review of Pollini's recording of Beethoven's late sonatas.
But considering it's Beethoven, not Chopin, I find it difficult to tell who's closer to
Beethoven's real mind-scape. I mean Pollini or Kempff.
I find Pollini's playing of Chopin (all his recordings) totally congenial to Chopin
himself, Etudes/Preludes/Polonaises/Scherzos and Sonatas .. All of them !!!
