NAFACO Concert-Pieces from the China tour
This concert featured
pieces which the Nanyang Academic of Fine Arts Chinese Orchestra played
during its trip to The People's Republic of China. I was supposed to go
on this performance trip, but some things popped up and I had to stay in
Singapore. In this concert, I am only playing some orchestral pieces:"chang cheng sui xiang"," beijing
xi xun chuan bian zhai", "hong hu chi wei dui zhu ti sui xiang qu","cha
xiang fei lian","she qing", "hai he feng qing","xinag yin ji huai","long teng hu yue" and
some which I cannot remember as it took place on 1/1/97 at Victoria Concert
Hall...
SYF CO Presentation 1997
This is the most important
event for the schools' Chinese Orchestras: The Singapore Youth Festival
Chinese Orchestra competition. Being a member of TJCCO ,we took part and
played in The Chinese High School Drama Centre on 27/3/97. There is a compulsary
piece : "Radiant Lion City", composed by Ma Sheng Long. For the other piece,
we chose a piece of Cantonese Music : "Han Tian Lei". 17 out of the 30
schools that took part got the "gold" award ,which we blamed the dip the
gold price resulting in "cheap gold". However, the best 6 of the competition
were selected to take part in a second round of competition and TJCCO is
one of them.
DHSCO concert
As a former member of Dunman
High School Chinese Orchestra, I have promised to perform in the concert.
But I was heavily involved in other activities, I could only find time
for the orchestra pieces and have to give the ensemble pieces a miss. I
played 4 pieces: "bei jing xi xun chuan bian zhai","bian chui zhi ye" "
shan hu song"," dong hai yu ge". The concert took place on 13/4/97, also
in VCH and it was my busiest week as TJCCO's own concert is just 3 days
away.
TJCCO concert
The concert was held in
the school's campus , in a 500 capacity lecture theatre, as we will only
be performing outside the school in alternate years. I played in these
pieces:"Huo Ba Jie Zhi Ye" a zhongluan solo,"Tai Shan Song's 1st movement
ri chu" and the two competition pieces.
TJCCE concert
The school's chamber ensemble
concert took place on may day, also at VCH. As this is the school's 20th
anniversary, the title of the concert is decided as"Intermesso-Duo Concertante"
As the college's only string bass player, i had no choice but to play in
it, but I enjoyed it a great deal. The first piece played is Vivaldi's
Concerto in G minor for 2 cellos and orchestra PV411. The soloist are both
ex-students of TJC. I have nothing to do then as this piece does not require
a String Bass. The next piece is the one you are listening to now:Samuel
Barber's Adagio for strings...which requires a low C on the bass. I am
only using a 4 string bass so i'll have to play some notes one octave higher.
The next pieces does not require a string bass too.It is the original version
for Peter Ilyich Tchaivosky's Adante Cantabile. After the interval, the
orchestra accompanies soloists Low Shao Suan and Low Shao Ying in W A Mozart's
Piano Concerto No 10 in Eb Major for 2 pianos and orchestra KV 365, a work
that is rarely played. In fact it took me 3 months to find a recording
of that concerto, in a series of complete Mozart piano concertos.
NAFACO concert-Mongolian music
In this concert I was only
required to play in 2 concertos:matouqin concerto"yao yuan de ao te er"soloist
li bo and si hu concerto "wu lige er xu shi qu",played by agula; ans 2 matouqin solos: "wan ma ben teng" and " chuang hu shang de ying"both of
them are from Mongolia and the sihu concerto actually tells the story of
Mongolia's greatest hero, Cheng Ji SI Han.
SYF CO Finals
The top 6 teams in the Singapore
Youth Festival Chinese Orchestra Competition were selected to take part
in a second round of competition on 23/7/97 at VCH. The six schools are
Dunman High School, Ngee Ann Secondary School, River valley High School;
these 3 occupying the top 3 places after the competition , and Temasek
Junior College, Chinese High School and Victoria Junior College. Each school
is to play 1 song from the first round of competition and to change the
second one. For TJCCO, the set piece was discarded and we have chosen "yao
zu wu qu"(dance of the yao people) as the second piece. As for the competition
results, as some might seee and one member of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra
choir pointed out,the orchestras larger in size wins the match. As for
TJCCO, we felt that we have done our best and we have achieved a lot ,
considering the financial inputs of the school.NO REGRETS....NOBODY IN
THE ORCHESTRA LET US DOWN.. allow me to quote the chairman's words" NOBODY
LET US DOWN...EXCEPT THE JUDGES." However I must stress that we had nothing
to say about the judges' decisions as they are the professionals in the
field. The teams that won really deserved to win.
No other concerts were played by me for this year.SO.....THAT'S ALL FOLKS!!!!
