Born in Wisconsin in 1966, Grant Colburn has been surrounded by music since birth. Both parents taught music in the local school system, his father a high school and church choir vocal director, and his mother a grade school music and piano teacher. With such an upbringing it was either sink or swim in the music world. Grant has been "drowning" ever since! Even with having a mother as a piano teacher, Grant didn't actually take formal piano lessons until a freshman in high school. By this time with some parental guidance, Grant was already capable of playing many of the usual classics, though his taste has always ran to the unknown and obscure composers and their work, especially that of theEnglish Baroque and Renaissance. Grant also began composing at this time (the Prelude and Minuet from the Suite in G Major on the Baroque page date from 1981/82). At the age of 16 Grant became the youngest student accepted to take part in two harpsichord workshops taught by world renowned harpsichordist, Igor Kipnis in conjunction with the Indianapolis Early Music Festival. Throughout high school Grant continued composing and performing, accepting his first organist post at age 17, and writing his class's graduation song. Grant began attending college with a career in music in mind, continuing to study piano, harpsichord, organ and composition when the unfathomable happened. Grant joined a progressive rock group named Worlds and completely abandoned the world of classical music for the decadence of rock 'n roll and Los Angeles. Arriving in the midst of late 80's "hair" bands, Worlds' classically influenced brand of rock was doomed to apathetic failure and after three years and the nightmare of touring for 3 months as a cover band Grant returned to Wisconsin in 1989 with no clear plans in sight. Almost by accident Grant formed yet another progressive band of a more sinister ilk called Graphic Nature with a good friend of his, while also returning to college to complete his degree. During this period Grant wrote rock music almost exclusively, spending little time on the neoclassic excursions of his youth. Graphic Nature is now working on their third album, yet the popular music world seemed too limiting to work at exclusively so Grant has returned to his first love, Renaissance and Baroque music. The fall of 1997 saw the completion of Grant's first book of all original Baroque keyboard music, many of whose pieces are on the Baroque midi page. Most of this music comes from the period of 1981 to 1986 with recent editorial additions (hopefully being improved by the knowledge and hindsight maturity supposedly brings). After this shifting focus of attention back to early music, Grant began composing new classical music in 1997. These works include the Rondo in D and the Suite in C on the Baroque page, and all the music included on the Renaissance page. The "Corpus Christi Carol" (a round in three parts) was recently published in the fall 1998 issue of Renaissance Magazine. At this point in life Grant is busy with finishing the new Graphic Nature album, continuing to write more music for his planned book of all new Renaissance music, his piano students and two organist posts, and promoting his book of Baroque music available here (along with living and studying the autbiographical life of a starving artist first hand!)
