Projects
Basic
Internet Course
for
NGOs
in Jordan
(17-19 May 1999)
JETT
Internet Team
The following projects are meant to gauge the extent of the participants'
benefit from the course.
For each project, follow the instructions and guidelines carefully.
If you have other ideas, please discuss them with either of the course
supervisors. A reasoned report must be submitted.
1. NGOs in Jordan
-
Find at least 5 Web sites on NGOs in Jordan (For each site list name, URL
and give a brief summary of content). [Hint: Choose a search engine and
enter keyword(s)]
-
Find the site of one NGO in Jordan and comment on the form and content
of the Home page. [Hint: Get a list of NGOs from the JETT
site]
2. JETT Project
-
Find information on the JETT
Project in Jordan. Prepare a short report on principal activities.
-
What is euroCom,
and what is its connection with the JETT Project?
3. The Ideal NGO Site
-
Browse through a few NGO sites and pick out a site that you like. What
do you think are the elements that would make NGO sites (more) attractive?
[Hint: Use a search engine and a proper keyword]
-
Suppose you were required to design a web site for your NGO. What are the
main items that you would want to include on this site? [Hint: location
of NGO, tel. no., main activities, etc.]
4. Women's NGOs
-
Find the sites of some international NGOs that deal with women's issues.
What special points are addressed by them? Supply quotes from the sites.
-
Compare these sites with local ones. (You have to look for these). Any
ideas on an "ideal" site?
5. Charity Begins at Home?
-
Find some international organizations that sponsor foreign NGOs (i.e. located
outside the national border). What are their main motivations? (Quotes
from their sites). [Hint: Browse euroCom's
Web Site]
-
What are the main services that the local charity organizations provide?
(Quotes from their sites).
6. Do We Talk to One Another?
-
What is the umbrella under which NGOs in Jordan work? Is there a site that
"collects" all NGO pages for reference? What use would such a site have?
Who would benefit from it?
-
What benefits could be had from preparing a common NGO database? Who do
you think should be allowed to access the information? Do you think talking
to one another becomes easier and faster with the Internet?
7. Collection of Information
-
What kind of information is your NGO interested in? How would you go about
collecting this information? Do you need to focus your search?
-
If you are inundated with data, how would you select relevant ones? Do
you think it is worthwhile to sift through all information? Do you think
that there should be a web page officer in each NGO?
8. Comparison of Sites
-
Both euroCom,
and The
National Information Centre (NIC) give lists and information
on NGOs in Jordan. Visit the relevant sites and compare the form and content.
Do you know of any other sites?
-
Do you have any thoughts on how the information on your particular organization
(if available) may be improved or upgraded? If your organization is not
included, choose one that you are familiar with. Would you make a recommendation
that your NGO be included?
9. Finding Donors and Introducing One's NGO to Them
-
Using a search engine, find sites that list NGO donors and sponsors. Make
a short-list of the most promising ones.
-
Compose an e-mail that introduces the work of your NGO to your prospective
donors and sponsors. Do not send the e-mail!
10. Should We Get Connected?
-
What recommendations would you make to your NGOs Administration in the
light of the information given in this course? Would you want a connection
to the NET? How would you convince the persons concerned of the necessity
of having access to the NET?
-
What are the constraints that limit the spread of Internet use in Jordan?
[Take your NGO as an example]
