The Incomplete
Compleat Radio Acting Credits of
Boris Karloff

William Henry Pratt was born on November 23, 1887 in London, England. He had six older brothers and sisters; their father was a civil servant in the British foreign service. He emigrated to Canada at age 22 and began traveling with various touring companies as an actor, under the name Boris Karloff.

By 1919, Karloff had moved to Hollywood and regularily received bit parts in silent movies. Although he continued in movies after the advent of sound, it was only in character parts.

In 1932, at age 45, Karloff was cast in Frankenstein, a role turned down by Bela Lugosi. The turning point in his career, both the film and Karloff's exceptional performance were very well received. Karloff became a star 'over night.' He was also effectively typecast as a villain or in horror roles throughout the rest of his career (although Frankenstein's monster had been a tragic hero).

On stage, among other roles, he played Jonathan Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace and Captain Hook in Peter Pan.

He performed on radio frequently, and with the advent of televison took over that medium as well.

His last role was that of an aging horror movie star in Peter Bogdanovich's Targets in 1968. Karloff died the following year from a respiratory disease on February 2, 1969 in Midhurst, Sussex, England. He was 82 years old.
