The Fountain

My friend Dave Moore approached me last Spring (1996) about writing an oboe solo for him. After sketching several ideas, I found myself in the courtyard in front of the music building. As I gazed up at the fountain, I instantly knew what to write. The piece was to be a tone poem about life around the fountain in theme and variatons form. It begins as a flourish depicting the rushing water of the fountain as it is first turned on in the morning. Following it is the main theme, describing the students running to their morning classes. The second section features a slow, singing melody depicting a spring afternoon with students sitting around the fountain. The third section describes the students scrambling away from the Forum Building (the building on the left in the picture) after a long day of classes, eager to return home. The final section recounts the most beautiful veiw of the as it is fountain lit up at night time. I'm sure you will agree that this piece definitetly deserves its place in the

Here's a picture of Dave. He's quite an oboist when he isn't busy doing work or goofing off.
