THE SHOW

Always Taking a Step Beyond...

Music:
Excerpts of "Journey to the Adventure Zone" by Stephen Mellilo

Take a journey into the land of the unknown. Experience the mystery of an ordinary field coming to life as the sabres run wild, flags fly high, and the band prowls across a distorted field of twisting and zigzagging yardlines. This scene described the new and imaginative theme titled: "The Adventure Zone"--An idea that went far beyond the ordinary marching show.

To convey the theme of the Adventure Zone, the band and guard imagined they were super heroes living in the Adventure Zone. The show was filled with musical and general effects, all brought together at the performances.

DNA and the Dino:
The band enters the field...or the Adventure Zone, we should say, spread amongst tarps, props, ramps, and guard members lying on the ground in hiding. After a haunting warmup, the band turns to the front, and the show starts with a bang. The energy and tension are obvious from the beginning, with tightly matched forms, guard work, and music. Most of the effects in the opener are musical, with the only visual effects being the tarps, guard movement, and the band crab-stepping across the field.

The Chase:
The visual package begins during The Chase. With Jeanne Weisman playing a ethereal mellophone solo, the band searches the field for the lost guard members. Forms begin to appear out of the scatter drill, and the chase is on. The guard becomes the enemy as the band chases them with forms and aggressive music. The focus is on the guard, specifically the weapon line. At the end of the Chase, the band once again goes into searching mode, while a group of guard members search the sky for alien objects. Jeanne's mellophone solo brings a close to violent clash.

Passing the Paradigm:
Before any music is played, half the band is lying, dead on the field. The other half, in a pod in the center of the field. Suddenly, members of the weapon line emerge from behind the ramp, dressed as monster-like, one-eyed Slinkies, portraying horrifying creatures. The music begins with the bass section (the pod) playing low, marcato notes, stomping forward. This section was labeled the "Barney section", because the stomping had the effect of heavy walking dinosaurs. This led to the "Doppler Section". The sections of the band reached geometric forms, halting, playing a dissonant chord. As the field commander pointed to the various forms, the notes came out. Then, he pointed his finger out in a wave-like motion, and a crescendo came out. The band members also moved in a wave-like motion to complement the musical effect. The result was the death of the Slinkies. The rest of the show was the celebration of the band in their victory over the evil Slinky-people.
