THE SHOW:

Futuristic Visions...

Profiled in the forms of a marching band, was a society that followed no leader. A

Fortress

was built amidst disorder, symbolizing individuals that saw the government as undesirable. The members moved in and

Out

of organized forms. The question is: Will they survive? It is hard to survive because chaos is the repition

Of

cycles. Drifting in a seemingly random pattern, the band displayed the cycles of

Chaos

, as distinct forms began to materialize among the confusion. At one point, the band built a wall, inhibiting the guard. Unexpectedly, the wall began to shake. Bodies quaked, the wall crumbled, and the pieces collapsed into a pile of rubble. This represented the instability of an anarchist society. In a final attempt at survival, the band tried to escape their doom, by hurling themselves into the enter of the tarp, limbs flailing. Sprawled on the ground, the society had self-destructed.

Fortress Opener
The band members start out protecting their fortress in an arcing form. The fortress surrounds a large grey circular tarp on the center of the field. From one side of the society comes the sound of a Sousa band playing Almighty Fortress, then from the other side, comes the jazz band. Finally, the group comes together, playing a full-out chorale, yet while trapping the guard within the walls of the "fortress". Suddenly....the walls shake...The Fortress is collapsing, and the machines take over..

The Motor
The band lies on the ground yet again, their bodies surrounding the guard. The percussion (pit and drumline) being the repetitive rhythmic cycle in 7/4 time, while the guard performs a machine-like dance in the middle. Slowly, the band arises, making edgy, straight motions. One by one, each instrument section enters, playing their own rhythm, finally joining together. The guard battles the band forms, with silver flags flying. Then...the cycle breaks, and the motor winds down. The band members bend over, seemingly out of gas. A tunnel is formed, and a single guard member runs down the middle. She is "attacked" by solo instruments playing the same rhythm, in different keys. The trumpets take over the rhythm, beginning the...

Fortress Finale
Chaos ensues as the band joins together, with a loud tutti statement. After an impact, the instruments break apart, fighting each other and the guard. Another visual impact, the band stops in a box, playing a dissonant chord. A wave motion passes from one side of the band to the other, while the chord intensifies. The chord breaks into nothing, and the cycle begins again. The drill, the music, and the guard all have quiet tension, while flying separate, then joining together. Towards the impact, the guard begins their own internal battle, with the flags and the weapon line fighting. With a trumpet fanfare, the flags battle back again the weapon advances, and the band forms circular forms, surrounding the tarp. The percussion takes their rhythm from the Motor again, moving onto the tarp, as the society self-destructs. The band and the guard follow, but instead, throw themselves violently on the tarp. After the carnage, the drumline remains, and the society has ended, proving that no anarchist society can survive.
