Placido Domingo


The son of Spanish Zarzuela singers from Zaragoza, Plácido Domingo was born in Madrid and moved to Mexico with his parents at the age of eight. He made his stage debut in 1957, singing a tenor role in a Zarzuela performance. At the conservatory in Mexico City, he studied piano and singing and debuted in Monterey as Alfredo in La Traviata and then joined the Israel National Opera where he sang no less than 280 performances of 12 different roles in two and a half years. In 1968 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur. He has appeared there in every subsequent season, having sung well over 300 performances in some 30 different roles.

Plácido Domingo appears regularly on the stages of all world's leading opera houses including La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Opéra de la Bastille in Paris, the Hamburg State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bavarian State Opera, the Teatro Liceo in Barcelona and the San Francisco Opera, to mention just a few. He has also sung frequently at the Salzburg Festival, and made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1992 singing the title role in Parsifal.

Mr.Domingo has a vast repertoire of Italian and French roles and is constantly adding new ones, particularly from the German repertoire. He also enjoys a second career as a conductor, having made his debut during the 1972-73 season at the New York City Opera conducting La Traviata.

A true renaissance man, Domingo also takes part in administrational duties as well as Artistic Adviser to the Los Angeles Music Center Opera and having served as Music Director for the World Expo in Seville. Domingo was also successful in raising millions of dollars through benefit concerts in aid of the victims of the 1985 Mexican earthquake in which he himself lost four relatives.
