Austin High Ballet Folklorico

History of the Austin High Ballet Folklorico:

1990-1992
In October of 1990 the idea of  forming a Ballet Folklorico was presented to Ms. Elizbia Tamez, a Spanish teacher,  by a student who was dancing with Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico de Tejas.  Ms. Tamez was thrilled about the idea, so she approached Roy Lozano with a plan.  Together they developed a strategy to begin a club, known as the Austin High Ballet Folklorico.

Upon receiving official permission from the superintendent’s office, a small Folklorico formed.  The group’s purpose was to provide a cultural window for all members of the Austin High Community,  to help cater to the needs of an increasing Hispanic population at Austin High, and also lower the drop out rate.  Together Mr. Lozano and Ms. Tamez held a tryout for members wanting to be in the folklorico.  After the first tryout, the group had over 20 students.  Unfortunately, many were lost to the no-pass, no-play policy, but the group did not die.

Miss Diana Garcia, a former teacher at AHS, also assisted in the formation of the group.  Roy Lozano provided the footwork and Ms. Garcia helped the students polish  what they had learned.  Both provided an invaluable service to the beginning of the Austin High Ballet Folklorico.

Over the next three years the Ballet Folklorico went from girls in red skirts and black leotards and boys in white shirts and black jeans to beautiful Jalisco dresses and Charro outfits.  The group performed held a Cinco de Mayo recital every year.  The frist show I was able to see included dances from Veracruz, Norte Chihuahua and Jalisco.  Without the support of Bob Enos, former principal of Austin High School, Ms. Elizbia Tamez, Ms. Diana Garcia, Mr. Roy Lozano, and his company the Austin High Ballet Folklorico would not have existed.

1993-97, Marks my involvement with the group.  There were only 7 members form the previous years and 6 new females.  Getting boys to join was always difficult.  We performed for the school in a special assembly and held a recital at the end of the year.  The group worked really hard and perfomed for 2 hours.  We included Jalisco, Veracruz, Norte Chihuahua, Norte Tamaulipas, Revolucion, and Huasteca.  After my first year, the group grew from 20 to 50 students.

In 1993, I submitted a proposal to central administration, for the Ballet Folklorico to be offered as an elective class for students after school.  I pushed for students to receive Fine arts and/or Physical Education credit.  In 1994, I receved official permission from administration to turn the club into a class.  Members of the ballet folklorico now received either P.E. or Fine Arts Credit for their participation.

With the increased number of participants came an increase of popularity for the group.  To meet this demand, the Austin High Ballet Folklorico performed about 30 performances a year including our  large “Cinco De Mayo” production for the community.  1997 was the last year I officially directed the Austin High Ballet Folklorico.  The group was performing dances from the following regions:
Guerrero, Huasteca, Jalisco, Michoacan, Norte Chihuahua, Norte Tamaulipa, Revolucion, and Veracruz.

I cannot take credit for everything.  Lita Ramon (Limon), My sister helped me teach Huasteca to the older members of the group.  Marie Dominguez (Limon), my other sister also helped with the basic steps and formations.  Both of my sisters helped out during my first two years.  My mother, (Agapita Limon) a very talented artist, also supported me and helped advise me on formations and character.  In addition, to expanding the selection of dances and regions, I decided on new costumes to use and regions to dance.  This I could not have done alone.  My mother is also a very talented seamstress.  She sewed our new Jalisco, and veracruz dresses.  She also made the Guerrero cosutmes for the boys and girls as well as the girls Tamaulipa, and Michoacan dresses.  Agapita also allowed us to use some of her costumes that belonged to her group Bailes Folclorico del Sur.

Another person sho heled the group out was Chuy Chacon, Director of Roy Lozanos Ballet Folklorico.  He came to Austin High during my second year and taught our Guerrero section.

1998 marked  the group’s eighth year of dancing and performing.  Due to a small set back, as a result of the absence of a director and lack of support, the ballet folklorico's membership decreased to 12 members. Although the size has decreased, the heart of the group still carries on due to both the leadership and commitment of the members, and the support of their parents.

Because they have maintained a high standard of performance, they have continued to maintain the highest level of confidence and quality.

Over the past Eight years the  Ballet Folklorico has established itself as an integral  part of the Austin High community and plans to continue celebrating with the community for years to come.
