The Flute is a great instrument to play. The only drawback is that it is a very popular instrument! There are lots of great flute resources on the internet as well.
Another year finally over! well I am going to miss school over the summer, but other things I won't miss. For my jury I played a safety piece (so that i could get a decent mark), the Poulenc Sonata for Flute and Piano. I'm starting to plan my junior recital early so that all my pieces can be review and very secure. Right now I think that I will play
I need another flute piece in there, so I'm going to have to think hard and come up with a good one that complements the others.

Well, my jury didn't go as well as it should have, but oh well it is over. On to more stuff!! Over Christmas I will work on the Quantz and Hindemith for my exam in January, and I will start speeding up the Stamitz Concerto for my jury.
I am going to have a shared recital with an oboe player on March 7, 2000 at 8:00 in Convocation Hall, University of Alberta campus. I think that I will play
Talivaldis Kenins Concertante
An undecided upon French piece,
and one other small piece so that we can still play a duet or something.

Ahh my jury (flute exam) is tomorrow!!! Why, you ask, am i updating my website? Well it is because i have to study for my theory test first and i don't want to do that. Don't you just love my logic? hee hee
For my jury I am playing Concertante by Talivaldis Kenins who is a Canadian Composer! It is a really awesome piece, and really challenging. I recommend it to anyone! Its published by Boosey and Hawkes if you have problems finding it.
I am doing my Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Toronto Flute in January. I hope it will be fairly easy considering i am playing pieces that i did last year for school (and one for last year's jury!). I am going to play the Quantz Concerto in G major and the Hindemith Sonata. For my April jury I will be playing the Karl Stamitz Concerto. Its an awesome piece.

My flute teacher, Shelley Younge, recently had a recital. In it, she played Thoughts for solo flute by Thom Mason. I helped her out by finding the dates for the program, but guess what? Thom Mason is a very hard person to find! finally I found the publication date of the piece (1969) and his birthdate (1941) in a book of american composers, with the help of two of the music library librarians!! I think, after this experience, that i will make a list of all the flute repertoire that I can, including composers dates, and publication dates. And also maybe something interesting about the piece.
Robert Aitken was here in Edmonton in February (I think?), giving workshops and lessons. He is a great teacher! I learned a lot about breathing and that we should try to use less lip when playing, and let the speed of the air stream do the work.
I played Density 21.5 by Varese at the masterclass. This is a very interesting contemporary piece. It was written in the first half of the 20th century (I'm not sure exactly when) for the inaugeration of someone's platinum flute (21.5 is the density of platinum). It has a bunch of super D's ... ick!
This year I also played:
Concerto in G by Johann Joachim Quantz
Nocturne and Scherzando by Gaubert
Sonata by Hindemith
They are all great pieces!
