At the FINANCE FOR NON-FINANCIAL MANAGERS" 2-day seminar conducted last week, a participant asked if it was better to charge as much depreciation as possible so as to pay less tax. The answer is that it is irrelevant how quickly you depreciate your fixed assets.
The tax authorities simply add-back whatever depreciation you have charged to arrive at a pre-depreciation profit figure and then deducts from it whatever tax reliefs are applicable before levying the tax payable. This then equalizes the tax liability of companies having varying ability to depreciate quickly.
Companies thus do NOT enjoy a tax advantage just by lowering their reported profits through higher depreciation charges if it operates solely in Singapore. Will discuss this issue further if I receive email requests to do so.
