  WHEN LAST WE MET 
 
Our last  meeting was a business meeting held at the ISC Consolidated club 1800, on June 18. Horace Webb Gave the blessing. President Bill Ambrose Called the meeting to order at 1900 hours. Mattie lead the membership in the pledge of Allegiants and Bill Ambrose read the Preamble. Distinguish member Mattie Matteson was recognized as well as the past presidents in attendance. 
Henry Domme gave the treasurer's report. 
Will Wathen gave the entertainment committee report on the crab feast and also that Casino Night would be changed to an Italian dinner. 
Harvey Moore Gave the Binnacle committee report. 
Under Old Business, Mattie updated the Coast Guard Day info. There was no new business, the meeting was adjourned at 1931 hours.

approaching. 
 Cooks are needed to feed the troops.

THE COAST GUARD DAY PICNIC IS SCHEDULED TO BE HELD ON 

         AUGUST 4TH 

 A SET UP CREW of 10 WILL BE NEEDED AT APPROXIMATELY 1230 HOURS.  30  CWOA  MEMBERS ARE NEEDED TO VOLUNTEER TO COOK AND SET UP.  The picnic will start at 1400 and last to 1900. Food service will be from 1400 to 1630 hours. The rain date will be the 5th of August.  Please contact Mattie Matteson at 484-7240 or

NEXT  MEETING 

 Our annual CrabFeast will be held on 18 July at the ISC Picnic Area at  the cost of $7.00. The Feast will start at 1300 and last till 1500.  Crabs and fish have been ordered, the club will provide refreshments. Members are asked to bring a covered dish.

July Nautical History  

July 1, 1939 - The Lighthouse Service was integrated into the U.S. Coast Guard. 
 
July 1, 1908 - The signal SOS replaced CQD as the international distress code. 

July 9, 1842 - Herman Melville, a deckhand on the whaler Acushnet, jumped ship at Nuku Hiva, Marquesas Islands.  His 
novel Typee was based on experiences there. 

July 13, 1771 - Captain James Cook returned to England at the end of his first voyage of exploration. 

July 24, 1965 - All U.S. Navy icebreakers were turned over to the U.S. Coast Guard. 

July 25, 1901 - The Swedish liner Stockholm collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria off  Nantucket in a dense fog. The Andrea Doria sank in 400 feet of water. 
 
WHERE TO GO   & 
WHAT TO SEE 

THE OLD COAST GUARD STATION was formerly called the Virginia Lifesaving Museum but they have now restored 
the Coast Guard Station name. Located at 24th & Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach, it commands a great view of the 
ocean. For some history of the Life Saving Service, the Lighthouse Service and the Coast Guard this is the place to go.
