WHEN LAST WE MET
Our last meeting was held on Feb.19th at
the Consolidated Club on ISC. It was called to order at 1900 by President
Bill Ambrose. Members in attendance were as follows:
Doug Wagner, Pete Glasz, Ray Kennedy, George
Ramsey, John Hearn Jr., Pete Brunk, Ernie Styron, Doug Thurnher, Ed Ard,
Richard Coupe, Shawn Fleming, Tart Daniels, Harvey Moore,
Will Wathen, Buddy Huskey, Gordon Boyd, Ed Kracken,
Floyd McGowan, E.J. Matteson, George Cote, Bill Brizandine, Henry Domme,
Harry Huggins, Larry Leonardson and Bill Ambrose.
Pledge Of Allegiance was led by Buddy Huskey
with President Bill Ambrose calling for a moment of silence following the
Pledge. Distinguished Members and Past Presidents were recognized. Treasurer's
Report was given by Henry Domme.
New Business consisted of the
formation of Committees.
The Executive Committee is made up of Bill Ambrose
as Chairman, Harry Huggins, Larry Leonardson, Henry Domme and Doug
Wagner.
The Legislative Committee is made up of Harry
Huggins as Chairman and John Hearn.
The Membership Committee is made up of Larry
Leonardson as Chairman and Doug Wagner.
The Entertainment Committee is made up of Ed
Ard as Chairman, Henry Domme, Will Wathen, Tart Daniels and Buddy Moore.
The Phone Committee has Ed Ard as Chairman.
Other New Business consisted of the presentation
of correspondence for the National Meeting. (See the attached Agenda Items.)A
vote concerning application for Distinguished Member was taken and we will
be sending a "No" vote. The Entertainment Committee was tasked by the President
to make a proposed Social Schedule.
For The Good of The Club:
President recognized Distinguished Member and Past President Matty Matteson
who talked about the Agenda for the National Meeting and Community Involvement
of the Club. A 50/50 raffle was held. Meeting was adjourned at 2015.
NEXT MEETING
Our next meeting will be held on March 20th at
1800. This is a Social dinner/Steak Out at the Consolidated Club on ISC
Portsmouth. The cost is $11 per person.

Club dues have been increased to $10 beginning
with the 1998 year. We ask that you bring your account up-to-date and make
checks payable to:
CW & WO Association.
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Coast Guard Officers' Spouses' Association is accepting applications
for two scholarships. The first is from the C.G.O.S.A. itself. Applications
are being considered from dependents (spouses or children) of active duty
officers & enlisted and retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard who
live in the Tidewater area. Applications must be postmarked no later than
April 15, 1998. To receive an application, call Nellie Leonardson at
721-6827 or Melinda Abrazado at 485-2382.
The amount awarded for this scholarship will
be dependent upon the money raised at the Charity Auction on the 20th.
The second scholarship is in conjunction with
the USPA & IRS Educational Foundation. This is for the children
of active duty, retired, or deceased Coast Guard personnel residing or
working in the Hampton Roads area. This scholarship is open to high
school senior and college students. A single award of $1,000. Will
be made in May of 1998. These applications must also be postmarked no later
than April 15, 1998. Call Nellie at 721-6827 or Denise Carpentier at
686-1467 to receive an application.
March Nautical History
March 9, 1862 - The ironclads Monitor and Merrimac
met in battle in Hampton Roads.
March 12, 1888 - In the Great Blizzard of ‘88,
at least 138 vessels were blown ashore, sunk, or damaged on the Atlantic
coast north of Cape Hatteras.
March 15, 1493 - Christopher Columbus returned
to Palos, Spain, the port from which he had sailed for the Indies seven
months earlier.
March 21, 1791 - Hopley Yeaton of New Hampshire
was commissioned by President George Washington to command the U.S. Revenue
Cutter Scammel. His was the first U.S. commission awarded to an officer
afloat.
March 21, 1791 - John Foster Williams joined
the U.S. Revenue-Marine to oversee the construction of the first revenue
cutter, the Massachusetts, of which he became commander.
March 24, 1934 - Following the end of Prohibition,
the Secretary of the Navy issued a general order permitting liquor on naval
shore establishments, but confining its use to "officers' quarters, officers'
messes, and officers' clubs."
March 31, 1932 - The U.S. signed the International
Whaling convention, endorsed by 21 other nations. The Coast Guard
was assigned the responsibility for enforcing the convention for the U.S.
