GETTING STARTED

First, you need some FREE space to put your personal information on.

Browse around at Geocities; it just keeps getting bigger and better. Join a "neighbourhood" filled with people that share your interest(s). Geocities also provides an easy to use home page editor, counters, guest books, and just abut everything else you need to create a home page. Trust me, you can have a page up in less an hour.

TRIPOD

Very similar to Geocities, above, also with 11 free mgs of space, PODS to join instead of neighbourhoods, a home page editor, free guest books, and more. Yes, and you'll have a page up in less than an hour.

LOOKSMART - Free Web Space

This site has a long list of URL's to obtain free web space from. Other than Geocities and Tripod, I haven't tried any of them out nor did I realize that there were so many of them out there! Fortune City hands out 20 mgs of free space; Homstead gives 100 mgs if you sign a friend up! Wow!

HTML

HTML (Hypter Text Markup Language) is what turns your web site into a place to behold. You simple can't have a page on the web without it. Fortunately, there are lots of HTML editors out there that range from "beginner" to "advanced" that will enable you to create a home page in no time.

But even though there are several good editors out there, I still think a knowledge of HTML is useful, and so I have added some links to sites that cover the subject.

HTML EDITORS

This site lists several HTML editors. The owner of this site has rated some of the top editors and has provided valuable comments to help you decide which one you might want to try out.

INTRO TO HTML AND URL

Brought to you from the University of Toronto, a great introduction to HTML for those of you who like to understand all those little codes.

JAVA

What does a Java applet do .... well, below is an example of what it can do. It's powerful and impressive. BUT ... be careful, applets can really (I mean REALLY) slow down the loading of your home page. So you better like it a lot before you put it onto your page. And YES YOU CAN DO IT, it's not that difficult to add an applet to your page.

GRAPHICS

How does that saying go? A picture is worth a thousand words? Yes, a picture can go a long way to getting the message across and there are more than enough around. However, another caution. Complicated graphics take up space and increase the time it takes to load your home page. (Be sure to check out regarding the use of white space on your home page.

FREE GRAPHICS

This site houses 351 graphics links. I've visted a lot of them and let me tell you, these ones are different from the usual graphics you see on home pages. They are free, but some carry conditions about how they can be used.

ANIMATION FACTORY

If you like those gifs that move, then this is a good place to start. The set up is nice, sorted by Accents/bullets/buttons, Alphabets, Characters & Creatures, Corporate and Office, Flags, Holiday ... you get the idea.

Some unusual and very attractive animated graphics. I stole some for my own page.

ANIMATED ALPHABETS

Just as the title suggests, this site provides gifs that lets your text come alive.

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND MARKETING TIPS

This page provides tips to help you creat a professional web site. Topics include: When to Use a GIF or a JPEG, Banner Deseign Tips, Fonts and Typefaces, HTML Code for graphic images, the 5 Basic Rules of Web Page Design and Layout, and much more.

LI-AN'S GRAPHICS

An EXCELLENT, HUGE index to TONS ... NO, ZILLITONS of graphics stuff. The owner of this page put a lot of time and effort into their work and it is certainly worth the time to browse through at least some of her links. This may be the only graphics reference you'll need.

ICON BAZAAR

A nice assortment of icons, including animated ones, that are well arranged and easy to sort through.

MINNIE

This is an Award winning home page at GeoCities/Wellesely, my cyber neighbourhood. Minnie is one of the Wellesley neighbourhood leaders. Her page is full of useful information and is a favourite of mine.

PAINT SHOP PRO

Once you are sick of using everyone else's graphics, you can create your own. I use PSP which is a powerful tool. Read on.

Paint Shop Pro and it is a powerful tool to create your own backgrounds, gifs, banners, animated gifs, buttons, and more. To help you along the way, this page has lots of instructions and hints and tips. Be sure to check this page out if you download PSP. (You can also download PSP from this site.)

Another well written document that takes you step-by-step through a number of PSP creations. Lots of illustrations, too.

Excellent presentation of PSP techniques ... When printed, the quality is every bit as good as any published book.

MIDI LINKS

Now, for those of you who like to touch a pilithora of senses, then add music to your page. Again, some midi files are real space hoggers so be aware of other space hoggers you already have on your page.

Whether you are just starting out with your home page or a seasoned builder, you will love this site. It will link you to everything you need and then some like tables, image maps, forms, frames (yes, those nasty frames), and more. This is one of my favourites.
