Fifth Disease (erythema infectiosum)

It is typically a mild disease caused by a virus (human parvovirus B19). The symptoms include:

* Fatigue

* A "slapped cheek" appearing rash on cheeks

* A lacy rash on trunk and extremities. This rash may fade and reappear with sun exposure for 1-3 weeks.

* Low grade fever

* Diarrhea

* In adults, most commonly women, symptoms may include joint pain

Fifth Disease
is spread by contact with infected respiratory secretions, i.e., coughing, sneezing, kissing on the lips, sharing food, eating utensils and mouthed toys. Touching hands to nose and mouth, reusing tissues and forgetting to wash hands after blowing nose also spread it.

Fifth Disease
is most contagious 1-2 weeks before the rash appears. Once the rash appears, the disease is not usually contagious. After exposure to the virus, it typically takes 4-20 days to develop symptoms.

Special Concerns:

People with certain medical conditions may be at risk:

* Pregnant women who become infected may pass infection to the unborn baby.

* Persons who are immunosupressed

* Persons with chronic hemolytic anemia

Persons with any of these three conditions should notify their physician if they have been exposed to any person with Fifth Disease.

Although school district rules vary, children will usually be permitted to attend school with a rash if they present a doctor's note, which clears them for school attendance.
