I have tried to upload files using AOL onto GeoCities but
it won't work! What gives?
You will need to grab yourself
a copy of Netscape or Internet
Explorer in order to do this. Make sure that the type of
Netscape or Internet Explorer you have matches the type of
AOL you have. For example, AOL for Windows 95 requires
Netscape for Windows 95.
**This also applies to MACs. Don't mix the 64k version with
the PPC one***

I want to use the new GeoCities java chat rooms but they crash on
me. Please help!
You will need to run off all JavaScript support on AOL before
trying again. Also make sure that AOL is the only thing running
if you are using AOL to browse the web.
To turn off Javascript on AOL 3 for Win95:
Click on Members, Preferences, WWW. When the AOL Internet
Preferences screen appears click on the Security Tab and uncheck the Enable
Java Programs and press OK.
If you are using a seperate browser to access the chat rooms the
same rule applies here.
On Netscape Communicator:
Click on Edit, Preferences, Advanced. Uncheck the box by Enable
JavaScript and click OK. Make sure only AOL and Netscape
are the only running programs when in chat.
On Netscape version 2.x-3.x:
Click on Options, Security Preferences. Check the box by Disable
JavaScript and press OK.
On Internet Explorer version 3.x:
Click on View, Options. When the Internet Preferences screen
appears click on the Security Tab and uncheck the Enable Java Programs
and press OK.
On Internet Explorer 4.x for Windows:
Right click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop and
chose Properties. Click on the Security tab and under Internet Zone
chose Custom, Settings. Scroll down to Java, Java Permissions and
chose Disable Java. Then head down to Scripting, Scripting of Java
applets and chose Disable. Click OK.
I can't make the HTML chat rooms work. Help!
Exact opposite of the Java chat rooms here. You will need
JavaScript turned on for them to work at all.

I have AOL for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 and can't get the most
recent browser to work with AOL.
You need to make sure that you have several things ready first.
Grab a copy of winsock to start at keyword: winsock. Make sure to
read the Winsock FAQ before you do so. It contains important
info. If you have AOL 3.x for Windows 3.1 you may skip
this step.
Next make sure that you have the 16-bit version (Windows 3.1
version) of your browser. Netscape for Windows 95
and Internet Explorer for Windows 95 will work with AOL for
Windows 3.1.

I can't get/view the code sent to me by a webring. What gives?
Since the release of AOL version 3 all HTML code sent by
mail or I.M. is treated as web pages. So if you were to send a piece
of mail that you wrote in HTML AOL would convert that to a web page.
What you need to do in this case is to get one of the free mail
accounts provided by such companies as Hotmail
and Yahoo. Once as you
have that account you can forward the mail you recieve from the webring
to it and copy and paste the code from there with no problems.
I was going to save the graphics for the webring but AOL keeps changing
it to an ART file. How can I stop this?
This is a problem created with the way the AOL builtin browser
handles images. It compresses them and saves them as ART files.
Unfortunately these will not show on any other browser if used.
Luckily you can get around this by turning off Image/Graphic Compression.
For AOL 3 for Windows go on the AOL menu bar and click
on Members, Preferences, WWW. Uncheck the image compression option
and press OK.
For AOL 3 for Windows 95 go on the AOL menu bar and
click on Members, Preferences, WWW. Click on the Web Graphics tab
and uncheck the Use compressed graphics option and press OK.
You should be able to save graphics as their original format now.
