Edward Hopper

1882-1967

Edward Hopper was an early twenthieth century American scene painter. Trained around the turn of the century by Robert Henri, Hopper emerged on the art scene around the time of the famous Armory show, exhibiting there, but then disappearing shortly after. He emerged again in the mid-twenties,expressing his feelings of America through scene paintings. From 1923 through the 1950s, he painted various genres of American life. From street scenes to landscapes, he tried to capture the very essence of an interesting time in American history. Many of his paintings seem tocarry a feeling of loneliness or emptyness, and this is quite understandable when one considers the multitude of problems that plagued America during this time. From the Depression through World War II, Hopper's scenes seem to echo the feelings of hopelessness and despair that existed at the time.
Not all of Hopper's works exhibited such a grim outlook, however. The landscape scene used here as a background is indicative of many ofhis paintings. Simple and colorful outdoor scenes with a clarity and spirit all their own. No despair here, only the interpretation and expression of the American landscape.
