NATIVE AMERICAN BELIEFS
1) Give
thanks for the life within you and for all life, for the good things the Creator
has given and the opportunity to grow a little more each day. Consider your
thoughts and actions of the past day and seek courage and strength to better
yourself. Look to benefit everyone.
2) Respect is to show honor or
esteem for someone or something and is the basic law of life.
3) Respect
the wisdom, of the council. An idea belongs to the people, support the idea if
they are true and good, and once a decision has been made, speak to no one
secretly against the decision.
4) Be truthful at all times, and under
all conditions.
5) Always treat your guests with honor and
consideration, giving of your best.
6) The hurt of one is the hurt of
all, the honor of one is the honor of all.
7) Receive strangers and
outsiders with a loving heart and as members of the human family.
8) All
races and tribes in the world are like the different flowers of one meadow. All
are beautiful, and as children of the Creator they must all be respected.
9) To serve others, to be of some use to family, community, nation or
the world is one of the main purposes for which we have been created.
10) Observe moderation and balance in all things.
11) Know those
things that lead to your well-being, and those things that lead to your
destruction.
12) Listen to and follow the guidance given to your heart.
Except guidance to come in many forms; in dreams, in prayers, in times of quiet
solitude and in the words and deeds of wise elders and friends.
Spirit of the Eagle
Indian legends
tell of the great eagle, who said, "you may use my feathers for your prayer
sticks whenever you wish to speak to the Creator. I am the one who flies the
highest and closest to the sun; therefore your prayers will be taken to Him
quickly."

There
are many things to be shared with the Four Colors of humanity in our common
destiny as one with our Mother the Earth. It is this sharing that must be
considered with great care by the Elders and the medicine people who carry the
Sacred Trusts, so that no harm may come to the people through ignornace and
misuse of these powerful forces. Before talking of holy things, we prepare
ourselves by offerings...one will fill his pipe and hand it to the other who
will light it and offer it to the sky and earth...they will smoke
together....Then will they be ready to talk.
