Love among the ruins struck one of Burne-Jones' biographers as "One of the most impressive of the painter's works, with it's vague hint of an untold tragedy which haunts the memory and refuses to be banished." The painting's title is from Robert Browning's poem, it is not supposed to be an illustration but a suggestion of sentiment but not a story.
