The
Goddess Sekhmet
Sekhmet is the Goddess of the sunset, destruction, death, and wisdom.
The cycle of life and death was created when the Goddess Sekhmet-Bast divided
into two sisters, Sekhmet and Bast. Together the sisters form the "Yin Yang"
deities of ancient Egypt. Bast the protector of positive energy
and Sekhmet of the negative. Sekhmet was known as the protector
of the righteous, vengeance and swift justice. In one account, she is created
by the sun god Ra, to destroy man for his sins but Ra had a change of heart
and changed Sekhmet to her less destructive form Het-heru. In this form she
is a goddess of love. Today she is revered by worshipers in the
field of the healing arts. Sekhmet is normally depicted as a dark skinned
woman with the head of a lioness. She can be distinguished from her
sister, Bast, by her rounded ears, Bast's ears are pointed
like the domestic cats. Sekhmet's feast is celebrated On October 31 the same
as her sister's, Bast, and her holy city is Memphis located in southern Egypt.
During her feast day worshiper drank red beer in her honor. Red is Sekhmet's
scared color.
I have only recently become aware of Sekhmet's sisterhood with
Bast. She has become special to me, because of my love of cats applies
to the large cats too. She is also important as the protector of negative
energy. Some feel negative energy is evil but that's not true. It is needed
to keep life in balance or things will become unbalance and chaos sets in.
All that is organic has both charges, all life is good and serves
a purpose. The only evil that I know of is works of
mankind.
