When she came to us she was a shy lonely little girl, terrified of what life held in store for her next. With those beautiful but incredibly sad blue eyes, she stole our hearts immediately. Because of the abuse she had suffered at the hands of her natural mother, she had built a wall around herself and was determined to not let anyone in. We knew that with time and patience, the love we were offering her would be accepted and she would learn to trust us. We assured her over and over that we would never allow anyone to ever hurt her again. Today as a rambunctious normal teenager, she is able to talk so casually about the physical and emotional abuse her natural mother inflicted upon her. I asked her one day how she was able to put those first 5 years of her life behind her. She replied that she thinks of her life in two seperate parts, there is the "before" with her mother and there is the "now" with us and she knows the "before" will never ever happen to her again.
