Xi Alpha Alpha is one of ten Charleston, South Carolina Beta Sigma Phi Chapters. It is a social sorority of women who meet on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, September through May. The main purpose of the sorority is to promote fellowship and close supportive friendships among its members. Currently, Xi Alpha Alpha has 14 members with members ranging from age 38 to 65.Members live in Ladson, Charleston, Hanahan, Summerville, Moncks Corner, James Island and Folly Beach. They have a wide range of careers; real estate agent, carpet store owner, public relations, school workers, secretaries, craft coordinator, Naval management analyst, Air Force services and a few retired members.
Chapter chartered in June 1975 with 10 members and has continued to grow in membership, sometimes having as many as 24 members.
Projects and activities throughout the sorority year include social activities, crafts, informative programs, suppers, outings, tours and service projects, as well as
several all-chapter activities. Members earn money by working the North Charleston coliseum food booths and netted over $3,000 this past year. They use this money to support their Service projects, ranging from buying Christmas gifts for Foster care children, providing school supplies for local children, purchasing clothing and personal items for residents at Florence Crittenton Home, as well as donating money to Beta Sigma Phi International Breast Cancer and Disaster funds.
Several of the social activities have become tradition over the years, like when they escape their role as household engineers and spend a weekend on Folly Beach (no make-up allowed). They enjoy touring the Charleston churches, learning the history of the iron gates and touring the Historical Charleston homes. They also enjoy plays and musical performances. They also are the only chapter that has been fortunate to have all members attend the Carolinas Convention for the past 3 years.
Meetings are most often held at members' homes and include a short business meeting followed by the social part of the evening. Many members like to think of their sorority meetings as their special night out with good friends -- something just for them!
