Yes, Amanda's Left Handed, and this is a Page about it. (:
Or am I? I write with my left hand, but I draw with my right. Because I can't do these tasks the other way round, this makes me "mixed handed" rather than "ambidextrous" - it's all horribly complicated which I guess is why I'm so interested in handedness.
You can even take this quick test to see how left sided you are. Yes - people also have left/right preferences for feet, ears and eyes: my own are right, left and left respectively, in case you're wondering (:
One of the most extensive sites about left handedness is Lorin's Left-handedness Site, written by an expert in the field. He knows a lot about the theory of handedness.
Handedness is determined partly by brain lateralization - left handed usually means right brained and vice versa. However, people who write with their hand hooked (like me!) apparently have the same brain architecture as right handers.
I used to think that left handers hooked their hands because we write from left to right, but some left handers who write in Hebrew (which writes the other way) also write with their hand hooked. It also seems that more males than females write "hooked", which may be partly because there are more male lefties than females - something to do with higher levels of testosterone in the womb, or so they say. Here's an interesting page for left handed writers.
Someone else who is interested (OK, obsessed!) with leftiness is Molly Joy; check out her Left Handedness site.
The newsgroup alt.lefthanders is a reasonably active USENET group devoted to left handedness.
For a really long list of links on left handedness, I thorougly recommend Rosemary West's Left-Handed page.
Please take the time to fill out my lefty survey. Here are the first 70 results sorted by gender, handedness and hand position.
Female (hooked) | Female (straight) | Male (hooked) | Male (straight) | |
Left handed | 11 | 17 | 2 | 9 |
Right handed | 0 | 5 | 1 | 5 |
Mixed handed | 1 | 6 | 2 | 3 |
Ambidextrous | 1 | 3 | 2 | 2 |
