Duty, honor, pride-words that reflect the spirit of
Americans, including women, who have defended the rights
and freedom of others.
Although nearly two million women have
served in our nation’s armed forces,
their story has not been told in history books
Women have long fought and died in service
for our country ever since its founding.
For instance, in the American Revolution, a Deborah Gannett
disguised herself as a man, a "Robert Shurtleff,"
so she could fight. In addition to fighting,
women served in other ways: women took over
jobs to free men to go to war, served as nurses,
trained men to fly -- the list of their contributions
is long. Unfortunately their contributions,
which sometimes cost them their lives, have been long overlooked.
This is for all the women that have fought
and died for our country.
