Mutiple Sclerosis

informed about this crippling sometimes fatal disease.

MS is a auto immune disease over 400,000 people in US and

World Wide over 1.1 million are struck with this disease

There are 5 types of MS

Bening -- Not everyone with M S leads to permanet

disability 15% patients are mild to moderate and do not progress.

Relapsing-remitting-- 80% begin with this of at anytime & more than 1/2 have this form.

It is charatuged by 1 or 2 years followed by peorids of

remission,Such flare ups which may include any of signs and symtoms last a few weeks or months.

Then gradually disappear symptoms may worsen each episode.

Primary-progressive--

First appearance of symtoms neurological funtions deteriotes without peroids of remission.

10 to 15% begin with this pattern.

Secondary Progressive --

All usually after years of having relapsing

remitting MS atleast half will enter a stage of deteration sudden relaps may still occur.

Progressive Relapsing---

Is primaryprogressive MS with addition of sudden quite rare.

Mutiple Sclerosis

The cause is unknow but has been linked to genetics on set is usually between the ages 20 & 40

and the course of the disease is usually 12 to 25 years.

Clinicial Manifestations Include

visual problems, urinary incontinence, fatigue, weakness or incoordinationof all exteremities,

sexual problems such as impotence in men,and difficulty swallowing.

Medical Management

There is no certain treatment altho some results have occured with steroids ,

and a drug Lioresal has been helpful with muscle spasms.

Well balenced meal and adequate fluids .

weight control makes it easier for mobility.

For the person who ha s reached the stage of being in bed one must remember to take special

care by turning the person due to sensory involvement they may not feel discomfort.
