OP's Guide for Administration of #transgendered and #tsgsn
(A note from the founder to OPS, SOPS, and prospective Ops) Hi, my name is Wendy, and I am the founder of #transgendered and #tsgsn. The channels have been on Dalnet for over seven years now. It has undergone many changes and is continuing to evolve into an ever-changing environment for TG folks and their friends. If you are new to IRC and especially new to our channel, the following may help you understand the way the channel is being run.
Ops are not automatically granted to those who request it. There are three levels of Channel administration. At the top is the Founder of the channel. This is the person who registered the channel with Dalnet and is the person ultimately responsible for the channel. Next come SOP's or super-operators. They have the trusted position of acting on behalf of the Founder in various functions of channel administration. They also can "grant" aop (automatic operator) status on the channel. The third level is AOP.
The founder, SOPs and AOPs are automatically granted op status by Chanserv once they have been placed on the AOP list by the founder or SOP. AOP's can also temporarily grant op status to others in channel. The temporary op status disappears once the grantee leaves the channel and chanserv resets. This is one reason why we do not do automatically grant op status for people who request them. From here on until the end of this document "OP" shall refer to AOP status.
In the years of Dalnet operation many people have asked us how they can get OP status on these two channels. If you ask for OP status, you more than likely will not get it. Just about all of the OP's and SOP's were "drafted" (asked to become OP's). We have had people who continually "bug" us for OP status, which is not the way to get them.
The first question you should be prepared to answer if you ask for AOP status, is "Why do you want to become an OP?" Personally I feel the best way to ask for ops without actually asking is to message myself or one of the SOP's, and just letting us know that you are interested in becoming an op if the need arises. Becoming an OP requires a certain amount of trust being placed with you that you will have the channel's best interest at heart and will devote some work to it.
But if you want to know what we look for in prospective op's, here is a sample of my criteria. Being a channel operator requires you to be open, honest (to your own personal comfort level) and above all, it requires a commitment on your part to be on line and in channel as much as your schedule and time permits without impacting your personal life.
You should spend time in channel getting to know not only the present OP's, but also the "visitors" and "regulars" who frequent the channel. (Most if not all new OP's are recommended by the current channel operators.) You should also be a "friendly" presence in channel by greeting new people and by trying to get them involved in the channel dialog.
If you want to be an OP for the "power" you are in the wrong channel. Most of the Kicking and policing of the channel is done automatically by the channel bot. In reality the best way to become an op is to be drafted or recommended by the current operators. A lot of times when the channel is busy or late at night or even in the daytime an op may "draft" you on a temporary basis to help out. This is often the first step into being placed on the Channel AOP list.
If you are an AOP and your nick expires you will be dropped from the AOP list. When you re-register your nick you will be reinstated. But if this happens 3 times you have lost op's for good.
