In order to make the Baltic the largest ship when launched on November 21, 1903, she was lengthened by 20 ft. during construction, which added 2,840 GRT. This made her slower in service and she had to be modified. She was delivered on June 23, 1904 and was the largest ship in the world until 1905. The Baltic made her maiden voyage on June 29, 1904 from Liverpool to New York. On January 23, 1909, the Baltic took aboard survivors from the Republic, which had collided with the Italian Florida in fog near Nantucket. Between 1914 and 1918 she was used occasionally as a troop transport during the first world war. In 1921 her steerage accommodation was altered to take about 1,000-3rd class passengers, and in 1924 she was re-boilered. Once again the Baltic became a rescue ship when she rescued the crew of the sinking schooner Northern Light off Newfoundland on December 6, 1929. She made her last voyage from Liverpool to New York on September 17, 1932 and then in October she was laid up. The Baltic was sold in January 1933, and made her last voyage from Liverpool to Osaka, Japan to be broken up on February 17, 1933. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
