Nitpickers’ Guide to the Cats Video

When you've watched this video as many times as I have, which is more times than I care to admit, you start to notice things. Granted, I didn't pick out all of these things without help. A young aspiring actress at the RUG chat board took the time and trouble to compile the original list, which she collected from our ramblings there. For that I thank her and wish her luck in her theatre career.

I have taken the original list and expanded it into a song by song guide that includes bloopers, continuity problems, bad cuts, cute background stuff, picayune observations, and some personal ruminations. Okay, there are a lot of personal ruminations, especially in the miscellaneous section at the end. So if you're not interested in my opinions, skip the last part.

Since I first presented this list, I have received e-mails from other fans pointing out details that I have missed and I will be adding them in here as my schedule allows. So if you have noticed something in the video that I haven't documented here, please do point it out to me. Here we go.

Overture

This is really picayune, but during the opening credits the fourth pair of dancing cateyes to fade back is the first to stay in the background.

Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats

  1. Alonzo makes his entrance from between the car and the tire after the line "Would you sit on his throne?"
  2. When the cats start singing, "Jellicles are and Jellicles do," you can see Elaine Paige, who had just sung the line, "when you're walking alone," slinking off the stage on the right of your screen.
  3. Jellylorum makes her entrance behind Skimbleshanks as they sing, "Jellicles can and Jellicles do."
  4. Old Deuteronomy comes up from between the car and the tire as Coricopat sings "Are you tense when you sense…"
  5. Victorea and Jennyanydots both enter, Vic following Old D and Jenny from the stage left wings, at the beginning of the second chorus.
  6. Tumblebrutus comes on from stage right at the end of the second chorus.
  7. As Tumblebrutus comes out, Etcetera also appears on top of the stove.
  8. After Tumblebrutus does his tumble and sings his line, Plato leaps onto the stage behind him.
  9. While Etcetera is singing her line, you can see the shadow of the trapeze cast across her belly.
  10. While Cassandra is singing her line, Tumble is checking out her legs. And the rest of her, too, actually.
  11. As Etc first swings down on the trapeze, keep watching the top of the stove and you will see that she has a spotter. This would have to be Admetus as he is the only Cat so far who hasn't appeared on the stage. I find it interesting, though, that he chooses to stay hidden for this part; the trapeze spotter in the Broadway stage production (usually Alonzo) was always quite visible to the audience.
  12. Of the cats who react to Jenny's high C, most noticeably Pouncival, most are "back to normal" in the very next shot.
  13. Allow me to detail those reactions: Pounce puts his paws over his "ears", Electra and Rumpleteazer, on either side of Jenny, look at her in surprise, Munkustrap and Rum Tum Tugger, right in front of her, jerk their heads up and make faces at each other, and Mistoffelees, in the next shot, is pawing at his ear in discomfort.
  14. On the first "Alleluia" Pounce is…well, just look for yourself; it's funny.
  15. When the boot drops most of the cats react with a look of indignant surprise. The two cutest reactions IMO are those of Pounce and Mungojerrie. Pounce puts his paw over his mouth with an "oops" expression and Mungo has a nonchalant look that says, "Oh well, everyone's a critic."
  16. The second time the cats sing "Handeling pieces from the Messiah," Munk takes a little swipe at RTT.
  17. The camera pans the front row as the cats sing "the mystical divinity" and you can see Alonzo casting sidelong looks at Plato and Munkustrap on either side of him
  18. As they sing, "Life to the Everlasting Cat," look carefully at RTT's chest. You can see the black snaps where his ruff goes.
  19. As the cats rush forward from the tire, Jenny takes the boot off the stage. She rejoins the group during the jetes.
  20. And speaking of those, I can't help but point out that Jellylorum and Asparagus stay at the back during those leaps and try to fake it.
  21. During the "Practical cats, dramatical cats," part the cats break into four groups that consecutively go up to the camera, reach out, and back away. The final group (Admetus, Munk, Tugger, Cass, and Plato) is the only group that does high kicks before backing away. Though Munk's and Tugger's kicks are somewhat hindered by their being in the back of the group. Tugger's kick goes out to the side and Munk just about kicks Admetus in the backside.
  22. Now this really bugs me. Asparagus suddenly appears at the front of the group when he had been at the back and sings, "There's a man over there…" (Side note: when the cats react to this, Mungo does the cutest snarl.) As he sings, the camera shows all the other cats, Munk included, doing a sweeping motion. But in the very next shot, Munk is running up to join Asparagus.

The Naming of Cats

  1. The cats get into position for this song more quickly than time allows. IOW, one shot they are spread out, next shot they are huddled together.
  2. As the cats are getting into their group, the back row right has them lined up (from the outside in) Coricopat, Admetus, and Tugger. But once they snap their heads forward, Admetus is on the end, and Cori is on Tugger's other side. Also, Exotica suddenly appears next to Skimble when she wasn't there before.
  3. Electra is the odd cat out of the group shot at the beginning.
  4. Also, Bombalurina and Tumble needed to squat down more as they were blocking Munk and Plato respectively.
  5. Just as the cats are starting to break into groups, Tugger, Admetus, and Cori are back in their original line-up and Exotica is gone. In the next shot, they are all back the way they were.
  6. As Admetus is trying to come around behind Skimble to be on his other side, he stumbles almost imperceptibly.
  7. During Victoria's solo dance you can see a smudgy spot on her right hip. It's also visible during her duet with Plato. Must be hard to keep that white costume so pristine, especially without a draining board! (You have to have seen the Making of Cats to get that joke)

The Old Gumbie Cat

  1. Bomb climbs onto the tire twice.
  2. When Munk nods to Mistoffelees on top of the car, he misses the first two words of his line, "and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat." Way to lip synch, Mike! ;~)
  3. Victoria and Etc play with Jenny's tail after she rolls out of the car.
  4. As that is happening, behind the kittens you can see Teazer and she appears to be doing a do-si-do with someone, I assume it's Mungo.
  5. Jemima has trouble with her mouse mask and has to take it off and put it back on again.
  6. As Munk sings, "She sits upon the windowsill," he repositions his feet, kicking Jenny's tail as he does so.
  7. As Jenny slides between Munk's legs, they tremble as he catches his balance. Wonder if he ever sat on her during rehearsal.
  8. When the shot changes, Jenny is not as far out between his legs.
  9. Jelly is watching her feet while she's dancing.
  10. Munk jumps out of Cockroach Pouncival's way and has to put out his leg and swing his arms to balance himself.
  11. As Jenny is doing her transformation, she is to the side with only a few beetles onstage (one of whom is coming out of the car trunk). Then the shot changes and she is walking down center stage with a whole bunch of beetles and the car trunk is closed with Skimble sitting on top of it.
  12. First we see the beetles in neat rows of three, then we see them all in a line kicking.
  13. And about that kicking line: the two tallest guys in the chorus, Plato and Admetus, are the pivot of the line taking tiny steps, while at either end we have the much shorter Mungojerrie and Victoria taking much bigger steps. And Mungo has to run to catch up.
  14. Just a humorous observation: in the line-up they stuck tiny Electra between tall Cori and giant Plato.
  15. All this time Pounce has been sitting in the stove with his beetle head off, waiting for his cue.
  16. As the straight line folds into formation again, one beetle (I think it's Pounce) jumps on the car, but is gone in the next shot.
  17. The straight line folds out, the shot changes, and suddenly there are Munk and the ladies trio.
  18. Jelly nearly falls during the first turn in the tap routine.
  19. In the final pose for the Gumbie Cat we have Jenny center stage with beetles on either side, Asparagus and Skimble on the tire, and Munk and Bomb left screen with Dem and Jelly right screen. Then the shot changes and Pounce is sitting on the tire without his beetle suit, most of the beetles are gone, and Skimble, Asparagus, Bomb, Dem, and Jelly are all in a line on one side of the stage. Jenny goes down this line rubbing paws with the other cats. RTT's music starts just as we would expect her to get to Munk, but the shot changes and there they both are center stage.

BTW, all these sudden changes in position that you see throughout the video are attributable to the bits of film that were left on the cutting room floor. Apparently RUG (the Really Useless Group) was too cheap to hire some decent editors.

The Rum Tum Tugger

  1. As the music starts, Munk jerks his head up and a bit of sweat flies from his face to hit Jenny.
  2. As that is happening, Pouncival is sitting on the tire doing something with his shoe.
  3. After Tugger says "meow" the first time, the group of older cats slowly turn their heads in unison. Well done!
  4. Tugger jumps down from the car and struts sideways, swinging his hips. Behind him Pounce is on the tire doing the same thing in the opposite direction.
  5. Just before the line "set me on a mouse," Pounce is gone from the car, but is back on that line.
  6. Mistoff does a cute little hop off the car.
  7. Just before Mistoff sings the terrible bore line, Pounce has the cutest expression on his face.
  8. As Tugger sings, "wrong side of every door," Admetus has appeared on the car next to Skimble. He is gone in the next shot. As the chorus sings, "RTT is a curious cat," he's there again being pushed back by Skimble, who apparently thinks he's getting a little too frisky. In the next shot he's gone again. He can next be seen by the tire, and after that he doesn't disappear anymore.
  9. Jelly comes onstage several times and Rumpleteazer keeps appearing and disappearing from the car trunk next to Skimble. She first jumps out onto the trunk before the disobliging line, next shot is gone, next shot is back, etc.
  10. Just before Bomb kicks herself into RTT's arms, Teazer is pointing to Tugger and panting. Then Skimble apparently scolds her because she looks pouty.
  11. As Tugger swings his hips next to the apparently unfazed Bomb, Etc and Electra are eye level with his butt, following its movement carefully. When Tugger bops Bomb with his hip, they look delighted.
  12. Just before RTT jumps in the middle of the sewing, there is a shot of the kittens and Victoria is doing the swim.
  13. The sewing in question is a cat embroidery, of course.
  14. Just an observation: Alonzo suddenly appears on top of the car late in the song and just watches the goings-on in a disinterested manner. This seems out of character for the black and white stud who for the rest of the musical behaves as if he thinks he, not Tugger, is the Everlasting Cat's greatest gift to lady cats. However, he also acts very aloof and largely unflappable. So I am guessing that he is older than Tugger and is watching him in a "been there, done that" attitude.
  15. Demeter jumps into the oven after she swipes at Tugger.
  16. As the cats get lined up and do that elbow thing, they are casting sidelong glances at each other. Dollars to doughnuts says that at least one dancer got accidentally elbow-jabbed in rehearsal.
  17. On the final "RTT is a curious cat," Skimble's mouth isn't quite with the words. Way to lip synch, Geoff!
  18. As the girls are rubbing against Tugger, the guys are rubbing against the girls.
  19. As Tugger swings his hips and sings abow-wow-wow the first time, Bomb is rubbing her own thigh. Pounce sees this and rubs his backside up against her leg and she rubs his rump.
  20. While that bit of horniness is going on, Tumble is also wiggling his hips with a devilish little smile.
  21. And Rumpleteazer touches her finger to her tongue, then points that finger at Tugger, a gesture which I take to mean, "Isn't he so hot?"
  22. During the second abow-wow-wow Mistoff can be seen sitting behind the pipe, yawning. At least, that's what someone else said. I don't think so myself as the magical one's expression doesn't seem to be one of boredom. And even though Mistoff does stay near the back during this song, he doesn't appear aloof like Alonzo. In fact, he seems to be enjoying the show.
  23. During the final abow-wow-wow Admetus is by the pipe looking down as he tries to move his hips like RTT.
  24. Just before Etc goes crazy, Plato and Cass are doing a full body rub.
  25. And Victoria, after watching Tugger's swaying hips, shakes her head as if she is dizzy.
  26. Just before the free-for-all dance starts, Tugger leans back against the kittens twice.
  27. Only a nurse would notice this and be turned on by it. When Tugger points at Grizabella, you can see a huge, beautiful vein running from his wrist to his shoulder under the spandex.

Grizabella: the Glamour Cat

  1. As Grizabella first appears, RTT flips his ruff and says something. After slow-mo-ing that moment (yes, I know I'm sick), I have determined that the first word begins in "f" and the second word ends in "oo", leading me to the conclusion that RTT was saying, "f*** you." Shame on him!
  2. As Bomb is skirting Griz, Tumble and Plato are behind them, egging Pounce to try to touch Grizabella. Then they push him out in front of her.
  3. As the group sings "was Grizabella the glamour cat," Electra is tentatively poking her head between Munk's legs. But in the shot where Dem runs right up to the camera, Electra is farther back.
  4. As the kittens crawl after Grizabella, watch Admetus and Asparagus at the back of the stage. Admetus pokes his head between Asparagus' arm and body to watch Grizabella. You have to really look because the stage is dark.
  5. Also, Cass is rubbing against Alonzo.

Bustopher Jones: the Cat About Town

  1. Bustopher's ascot has little fish skeletons on it. Oh, the details you can see in a video!
  2. On the Ahs you can't hear the men as well as the women, and the recording seems to be out of synch with the singers' mouths.
  3. After Bustopher's solo ends and the other cats start singing, watch Admetus behind Bustopher. On the phrase "is the name" he is too busy making cute kitten eyes to realize he is supposed to be singing. In the next shot he is singing again. Way to lip synch, Frank!
  4. After Bustopher gets up off of the hat, Admetus is the one to take it backstage.
  5. When Coricopat is passed over by Bustopher, the poor thing wilts in disappointment.
  6. When Bustopher hands his flower to Jenny, both Bomb and Jelly reach for it and look embarrassed when they realize he doesn't mean it for them.
  7. As Bustopher says "Toodle pip," pause your tape to see Munkustrap salute in a cute way.
  8. When the thunder crashes, several cats, like Bustopher and the ladies trio, don't react immediately. They wait for the sirens.

Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer

  1. When M&R throw their bags, they each land on the beat. Happy coincidence.
  2. After the line "given to rove," M&R switch places suddenly as Mungo split jumps over Teazer's head. This is because RUG hacked two whole stanzas out of the middle of this song. Curse them!
  3. When Mungo sings, "I'm afraid you must wait and have dinner tomorrow," his lips are out of synch on "tomorrow". Way to lip synch, Drew!
  4. On the line "Was it Mungojerrie, or Rumpelteazer, or could you have sworn that it mightn't be both?" as Teazer says her name, Mungo looks at her with a strange expression on his face. I have taken it to mean, "Mmmm, what a fine looking queen!"
  5. As Mungo says, "It was…Mungojerrie!" Teazer is drumming her fingers on his hips. Whoo! I guess Drew Varley isn't ticklish, or at least not there. :~)

Old Deuteronomy

  1. M&R keep changing places on the car during this song.
  2. The first time everybody sings, "Well, of all things," Plato and Jemima are rolling around on the stage in a very suggestive manner.
  3. As the cats are getting settled down for Munk's solo, Cass goes down into her split twice.
  4. As Munk sings, "He's a cat who has lived…" Mungo can be seen catching his breath.
  5. When Munk first starts to sing, Etc is lying on the stage with her feet closer to him, but when he says the "Queen Victoria's accession" bit, she has turned around so that her head is closer.
  6. And the prize for "most flexible male cat" goes to…Plato! Surprising since he's also the tallest. As Munk begins to sing, "At the sight…" Plato stretches his leg up slowly until his foot is behind his head. Ouch!
  7. Once again the cats get into their huddled group more quickly than time allows as they go to meet Old Deuteronomy.
  8. As they are getting to their spots, Plato steps on Asparagus' tail as the latter is rising to his feet.
  9. As the kittens are crawling forward, if you really look you can see that Victoria is crawling with her right eye closed. Kind of funny considering that the line they had just sung was, "Oh, my eye!" (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
  10. Pouncival is crawling forward about eye level with Munkustrap's butt. If you watch him, you can see him trying to look around it. Then when Old D finally comes in, Pounce practically climbs over Munk to get to him.

The Awefull Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles

  1. Ooh, there's so much to nitpick in this one! Let's start with Victoria. During the beginning of this segment she is sometimes being played by Jo Bingham (who normally plays Etc) instead of Phyllida Crowley Smith. You can first see this when Munk says, "On the night we make the Jellicle choice." The Victoria that turns to Mistoff is played by Jo. Also when Munk says, "Jellicle cats can all rejoice!" it's Jo again. And finally, she can be seen several times when Victoria is sitting next to Old D, usually when the camera is watching Munk from the side. I think after the peke and the pollicle come out, Phyllida resumes her role for good.
  2. Back-tracking a little, again I must point out that the cats clear out more quickly than time allows just before P&P.
  3. When Munk says, "the intervention of the Great Rumpus Cat," on "Great" his legs are apart and straight. Then the shot changes and suddenly his legs are apart and bent. Fastest legs in the West, I guess! :~)
  4. During the first set of barks, when they show a close-up of Asparagus barking you see a leg stretched out beside him. It's white with a dark leg warmer and I think it belongs to Plato. Or maybe Tumble; I'm not sure.
  5. In case you didn't know, M&R are the pollicle and the peke.
  6. As M&R do that little pirouette, Munk surreptitiously pulls up his arm warmer.
  7. Mungo messes up the bark twice and Munk, disgusted, bops him on the head and sends him away. Mungo stalks away and makes as if he is grumbling epithets at Munk over his shoulder.
  8. After Munk bops Teazer with his hip, keep watching her in the background. Jenny comes over and encourages her to go back to Munkustrap. By encourage I mean she pushed her toward him.
  9. After Teazer pushes through Munk's legs, you can see the pollicles arguing over their positions in the marching line.
  10. As the pollicles march past the tire, Tumble waves to Old D.
  11. When the pollicles sing "the poodle, the pom, the Alsatian," they are all marching one way, except for one who is marching along in the opposite direction. This is Plato. Now as Munk stops Pounce, watch the end of the line, which is still moving. As Plato goes by, Alonzo bops him over the head as to say, "This way, you idiot!"
  12. Pounce is wearing his shoe box backwards, presumably so that Munk can hold him back better. But it reminds my brother and me of the teenage boys who wear their ball caps backwards, and makes him look like the juvenile delinquent that he is!
  13. While Pounce is swinging at Munk he is gritting his teeth even though the men are supposed to be singing. Apparently he can't sing and swing at the same time. (Sorry, couldn't resist)
  14. Is anyone else reminded of a hockey player ready to rumble when Pounce doffs his boxes so as to punch more effectively?
  15. Okay, for the true nitpickers, here are the brand names one can find on the pollicle costumes: Mungo is wearing Just Juice boxes on his hands. Pounce has a Clark's shoe box. Asparagus has a Nike shoe box. Tumble and Cori both have Doc Martens shoe boxes. Alonzo has Palladium and Plato has Adidas. That's all I could determine from repeated rewindings and slo-mos. If you can detect more, certainly tell me about them.
  16. As Skimble and Mistoff come forward for the Scottish part, Cori is behind them scratching his leg in a very dog-like way.
  17. Munk stares at RTT with the bagpipes as if he is thinking, "You gotta be kidding me!"
  18. Asparagus loses his shoe box as RTT goes by with his bagpipes.
  19. As the pugs and poms do their little dance, part of someone's costume ends up in front of them. (I am told that it is one of Mistoff's pollicle shoes.) Electra trips over it and bumps into Jemima who stumbles and pushes her away. It happens very quickly, though.
  20. You can't hear the men on the second round of barks. As the girls sing "huffery snuffery," the guys are supposed to be singing "bark bark bark," etc, but you can't hear them.
  21. After shouting, "Now!" Munk continues where he left off. In the close shots he is addressing Old D, and in the wide shots he is addressing the whole group.
  22. When Munkustrap is singing, "when suddenly out," Pounce is "shooting" the pekes with an imaginary gun.
  23. As Rumpus raises his leg slowly up over Munk's head, you can see the muscles rippling in the leg that he's standing on. (Can you tell I'm totally stuck on the Rumpus Cat?)
  24. Someone made the following observation: The Rumpus Cat is biting his lip to keep from laughing on the line, "or hairier." I have watched for this myself and have concluded that it is just shadows passing across his face that gives this impression. Which is not to say that he may not be surreptitiously biting his lip. It is, after all, rather unusual for Frank Thompson to have his mouth closed. He's usually showing off his amazing jaws.
  25. When the Rumpus Cat kicks over Munkustrap's head, Munk seems to be anticipating the kicks. I suspect he may have gotten kicked in the head during rehearsal.
  26. When RTT realizes he's not getting the attention he feels he so deserves, he stalks off with his bagpipes in a "forget you!" manner.
  27. After the final chords of the Great Rumpus Cat, the cats all scoot up to Old D. Watch Plato carefully. He grabs Victoria's tail, puts it in his mouth, and shakes his head around as if he's trying to shake the life out of it.

Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats

  1. Just an observation: Rumpus Cat takes off running when the thunder crashes. I like to imagine him running backstage, hurling his wig and goggles one way and his collar and gloves another, saying, "Outta my way, I gotta change!" Because it is a mere three or four minutes later, when Mistoff says, "we like to practice our airs and graces," that he reappears as Admetus. He comes out through the oven, and he comes out three times.
  2. Watch Alonzo and Jemima in the background at about this point. They are getting quite friendly. So much for innocence.
  3. Backtracking a little here, as Victoria comes onstage you can see Mistoff waiting in the wings.
  4. Pouncival emerges from between the car and the tire on the line, "Jellicle cats come one, come all," though you can't really see him until the line, "Jellicles come to the Jellicle ball."
  5. As Admetus, Munk, and Plato say, "Jellicle cats develop slowly," Admetus casts a sidelong glance at Munk.
  6. Plato is the one who swipes at Tumble after the latter says, "Jellicle cats are not too big."
  7. Victoria helps Old D onto the tire during this part since Munkustrap is shirking his duties.
  8. At the beginning of the video, Tumble seemed to have a deep singing voice while Asparagus was more tenorish. But during this number, Tumble's voice is suddenly high and squeaky while Asparagus' has gotten a little deeper.
  9. Mistoff rolls his eyes as Asparagus says, "Jellicle cats are roly-poly."
  10. On the line "Jellicle cats, as we said, are small," Etc, Vic, and Teazer do that little step and lean forward. As she leans forward, Teazer looks back over her shoulder to see Alonzo right there leering at her.
  11. As the cats sing, "Jellicle cats come one, come all," Etc is poking her head through RTT's legs (of course), and instead of singing she is mouthing the words, "He's mine!"

The Jellicle Ball

  1. Just before the cats huddle together to watch the shooting star (which is what it looks like to me), Jelly and Asparagus peel out and we don't see them again till the end of the Ball.
  2. Mistoff starts dancing solo, does a pirouette and his tail swings around and whaps his hip. He glances down quickly to see what it was.
  3. As Alonzo is coming out to join Mistoff, Tugger starts to come out on the car. In the next shot he's gone.
  4. When Pounce and Mistoff mimic Alonzo's hip shaking thing at Tumble, Pounce is a little late. But the look on his face is too cute!
  5. As Alonzo is going off with Cass, Tumble and Mistoff are doing their dance. In some takes Pounce is dancing with them and in others he's sitting on the tire.
  6. When Bomb comes out to do her dance, Pounce, Tumble, and Mistoff walk away then turn back to look at her. Tumble and Mistoff look annoyed at being upstaged while Pounce seems to be checking her out.
  7. While the girls are doing their sexy dance, watch the guys gathering upstage on the left of your screen. Their attitude conveys the message "Let's go get some!"
  8. I wish I could have a clearer look at Admetus' face when Tugger jumps off the tire next to him and drapes an arm around his shoulders. He looks back at him in a kind of "Oh, it's you," way.
  9. I love the look on Admetus' face when he comes up behind Cass. He looks quite pleased with what he gets.
  10. When RTT picks up Bomb she grabs his hand like she thinks she's going to fall. And her fear is not unfounded because as RTT carries her off he staggers under her weight. Of course, she is the tallest woman in the cast and John Partridge doesn't appear to be exactly a ballet dancer. Maybe Plato should have been the one to lift her.
  11. Important to note: during this segment only, RTT is wearing a different collar with no spikes, presumably to prevent injury to Bomb during the lift.
  12. Plato and Demeter do the best lift IMO. And as he carries her back, Teazer points to them and claps enthusiastically.
  13. As the men carry the girls back, Mungo extends a hand to help Victoria down from the tire. What a gentleman!
  14. When the cats are bent over spinning most of them are holding their tails out of the way.
  15. Mistoff is doing some leaping spins to get to his spot quickly.
  16. As the cats all lean back, Skimble puts out his leg to steady himself.
  17. Before joining Mungo in the pair-off, Teazer exchanges a face sniff with Tugger.
  18. During The Lift, Etcetera is on the right side of your screen doing some elaborate extension while lying on her back with both legs in the air. Admetus crawls over to her and rubs his head and back along the underside of her leg and yawns. How cat-like!
  19. After Plato does the revolution he starts to lower Victoria to his shoulder. The shot changes, his arms are straight, and he starts lowering her again.
  20. Okay, here are the pairings: Munk and Old D aren't participating, of course. We've got Vic and Plato, Asparagus and Jelly, Mungo and Teazer, RTT and Jenny (who'da thunk it!), Alonzo and Cass, Jemima and Tumble, Mistoff and Electra, Cori and Tant, and Bomb and Pounce. Admetus and Etc have their backs to each other so I don't think they're a couple. Skimble doesn't seem to have a partner, and Demeter is apparently saving herself for Munkustrap.
  21. As the cats are settling down, Etc yanks up her arm warmer.
  22. Interesting to note: Bomb the bad girl starts to rest her hand on Pounce's hip, then changes her mind and puts her hand down in front of her. While Jemima, the supposed innocent rests her hand on Tumble's hip without any apparent qualms. And then the shot changes and Jem and Tumble suddenly have their backs to each other.
  23. After the guys' dance led by Munk, the girls come forward, then the shot and music change and we suddenly have lots of cats dancing. Another bit of film left on the cutting room floor.
  24. During this dance, Tugger is on the tire playing guitar on his tail.
  25. Watch Teazer during this part. In one brief shot you will see that one of the black ropes that holds her tail on has broken and is hanging down in front.
  26. After Tugger's macho man dance, several more cats join them for what I like to call the "bad boy, dirty girl" dance. The participants are Tugger, Plato, Admetus, Alonzo, Teazer, Tumble, Cass, Bomb, Demeter, and Jemima (I think that's all of them). So tell me, where is Mungo for this dance and why is sweet little Jemima participating?
  27. And during this dance Skimble is standing on the pipe, mimicking the moves as best he can without actually moving his feet.
  28. Keep an eye on Tugger during the closing group dance. At one point he gets lost and looks around to see where everyone else is.
  29. I have to mention this because I just love it. As the music is winding down the cats do a move where they lift one leg up in front and spread their arms and torsos back. Plato, without a doubt, gets the best spread of all the cats.
  30. Again on Plato, his ending pose for the Ball was sitting on one leg with the other stretched out in front as well as both arms and his torso. Just before Griz comes on he does a cat-like stretch before turning to Old D.

Intermission

(No, I didn't forget about Grizabella, but there's nothing to nitpick since there's only two cats on stage for most of the scene anyway.)

Oh, okay, I found something. Just before Jellylorum sings, you can see Exotica getting settled to watch Grizabella from the pipe. She is gone in the next shot that shows the pipe.
