This page is designed to help those who feel a little intimidated setting up their GeoCities website get on their feet and running as quickly and painlessly as possible. There are very few people who successfully build a "happy" home without at least some support, input, help, guidance, whatever you want to call it, from others in the community. Hopefully the links and information on this page will give you an easy to use reference to answer the most often heard questions and solve the most common problems associated with being the "new kid on the block" Homesteader.
Question or Problem | Answer or Solution |
1) "I've lost or haven't recieved my GeoCities Password." | You need to allow several days for your password to arrive. If you've still not recieved it, go to GeoCities Password Look-up |
2) "I know nothing about starting my page, but have the desire. What now?" | You can start out with GeoCities EZ Editor, located in File Manager, which walks you thru the basics of page creation. |
3) "I'm going nuts trying to figure out what all these color codes(i.e."#FFFFFF"} are actually gonna' look like on my page!" | This is a JAVA based color picker for HTML. |
4) "EZ Editor is ok, but I want a little more flexibility." | In that case, use GeoCities "Advanced Editor", again located in File Manager. |
5) "OK, I've got this really kewl graphic (HTML file, photo, .gif, icon, etc.) on my computer that I want on my web site. How do I get it there?" |
You have a couple of options: 1) Use the EZ Upload Utility found in File Manager. (NOTE: If File Manager says your browser is not compatible with EZ Upload and you have MS Internet Explorer, you can download "IE Upload Add-On" and it will be compatible.) 2) You can utilize an FTP Utility. I, as well as GeoCities, recommend you use the "ws_ftple.zip" file. (NOTE: It seems that FTP handles larger uploads better than EZ Upload. EZ Upload is simpler for smaller ones. |
6) "I don't have "this really kewl graphic", but I want some!" | Go to The Graphic Station. Some of the graphics on my pages came from there. It's a great place to start. (NOTE: If an artist is generous enough to allow his work to be used for free as long as you provide a link back to their site, BY ALL MEANS, DO IT!!! For an example of how to do this, take a look at the bottom of my index page. That way some artwork will remain free for everyone's use in the future. Unless, of course you're more than capable of doing it yourself; and if that were the case you probably wouldn't still be on this page;-) ) |
7) "I have some killer photos (i.e. me, family, scenes, etc.) in my album that I would like on my page. How can I do it?" | Ahh! Your questions are getting tougher. There are a few solutions: 1) You can purchase a scanner and scan your images yourself. 2) You can purchase a digital camera. 3) When you get a roll of film developed, most labs offer converting pic's to cd-rom or floppy disk as an option. 4) You can send your photos to me or another volunteer who will scan them, send you back your photos, and send you your new digital images.[E-mail me for details.] |
8) "You keep refering me to ".zip" files. What am I supposed to do with 'em once I download them?" | If you don't already have it, WinZip is a "must have" utility. Go to WinZip Home, and download either "WinZip 6.2 for Windows 95 and NT", or "WinZip 6.2 for Windows 3.1", depending on your operating system. |
9) "How do I get one of those most excellent "GeoGuides" for my page?" | Go to Meet the GeoGuide. |
10) "So far, so good. How 'bout a counter so I know how many visitors my place has had?" | Go to GeoCounter Help. |
11) "OK, how about a guestbook so I have an idea who is visiting my site and can visit theirs?" | Go to create a GeoGuestbook. |
12) "So far I've been spending a lot of time "editing online". Is there a way to do it "off line"?" |
If you don't already have a "free-standing" HTML editor or a "packaged" one such as Netscapes Communicator Composer, [or even if you do!] you really should consider ![]() |
13) "Well Alan, we've come a long way in a short time. I'm at the point that I'd really like to know what makes all this stuff "tick". Where can I go to find out more details?" | Go to The Ultimate WebSite Developers Resource. The name says it all! |
