Confederation and Beyond

BROCKVILLE INFANTRY COMPANY-1862. (P.O. Box 2041 Brockville, Ontario K6V 6N5. Canada) Our group of historical reenactors was formed in the fall of 1989, taking the field in july 1990. We can muster 18 men plus a drummer boy and young flag bearer. We wear scarlet tunics with white Austrian knot and dark navy trousers, our accoutrements are made of white leather. We carry an 1853 model Enfield muzzle loading rifle-musket cal. 577. Using an 1860 drill manual, we practice precision drill regularly during the year. We perform at numerous parades and other ceremonies in Eastern Ontario. The wives of some members have made their own 1860’s hooped dresses. The original Brockville Company of Light Infantry was formed in 1862, when Canadians feared war would break out between Britain and the U.S., this fear caused a great number of men in the British colonies to volunteer for local militias. The U.S. Civil War ended in April 1865 and a new threat to British North America was the Fenian Brotherhood. These Irish-American zealots wanted to strike at Britain for injustices in Ireland. They staged raids into Ontario and Quebec in 1866 and 1870., but they were beaten back to the U.S.A. by the Canadian Militia and the British Regulars.

THE COLUMBIA DETACHMENT OF THE ROYAL ENGINEERS. The Columbia Detachment is a re-creation unit based in the British Columbia with members throughout the Pacific North-West. We are an educational unit that re-creates the detachment of Royal Engineer officers and men who were dispatched to the newly founded Colony of British Columbia from 1858 to 1863 to map, survey and keep the peace in the "savage wilderness". We travel to many of the Forts and National Historic Sites throughout the Pacific North-west and work closely with Parks Canada and the National Parks Service. We field approximately 50 Engineer Officers and enlisted men, scientists and civilians, women and children and are available for any historic event or presentation. We are always looking for more members.Contact: H.R.Luard, Captain RE at:sherwood@smartt.com

9th BATTALION RIFLES (VOLTIGEURS) COMMEMORATIVE 1885, was formed in Calgary, Alberta in February 1985, with the kind permission of the present Voltigeurs de Quebec (Militia) in Quebec City, Quebec. As a Rifle Battalion, the unit wears a 'Rifle' uniform depicting the parade dress of the 9th Battalion Rifles, who saw active service in North West Canada during 1885. The unit relies upon the personal commitment of our volunteer members. The static displays and rifle drills which we perform for the general public are held at various locations and provide our members with a unique opportunity to depict a part of Canada's and Alberta's history. If you would like further information and have an interest in the military aspect of this period of Canada's history, please contact: R.B. Howard, 72 Whitmire Road NE, Calgary, Alberta T1Y 5Z3, phone (403)293-9030, email: vdeq1885@canada.com.

MIDLAND HISTORICAL VOLUNTEERS 1885 were formed in Saskatoon in 1985, the 100th Anniversary of the Riel Rebellion. The members represent "A" Company, the 15th Argyle Light Infantry from Belleville Ont. through "H" Company, the 49th Hastings Rifles from Hastings Ont. of the original Midland Provisional Battalion which was first raised on 1 April 1885 at Old Fort Henry in Kingston Ont. We participate in a wide variety of events including the opening ceremonies of Louis Riel Day in Saskatoon, reenactments at Batoche and Old Fort Battleford Historical Parks. The group also does a Ceremonial Guard each year at Marr House, which was used as a field hospital for the North West field force in 1885.
