Troop 916 has been chartered to the Wesley United Methodist Church in beautiful White Oak, PA since 1993. In mid-1992, after Pack 916 enjoyed several very successful years, Greater Pittsburgh Council approached the leaders of Pack 916 about the possibility of forming a new Boy Scout Troop. Of the original 11 scouts in the troop, 5 have reached the rank of Life. One of those scouts has completed his Eagle service project, and is on the verge of completing the remaining badges necessary for him to reach the rank of Eagle. We hope to have the first member or our Eagle's Nest before the end of 1996!
We are proud to be a troop that participates in many community service projects. Our most recent project was for the Pittsburgh area American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life at the McKeesport Area High School each July. Teams of walkers solicit pledges for each lap that the team walks around the high school track. The ACS also sells luminaria that can be purchased either in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of a loved one who lost a battle with cancer. Our troop puts together the luminaria bags, then distributes them evenly all the way around the track. (This year there were over 350 luminaria!) We then light the candles just before dark. The names of all those honored with a luminarium are read by a local celebrity. This year's reader was David Highfield, a reporter for KDKA, Channel 2 in Pittsburgh.
We are closely associated with Cub Scout Pack 916, which is also chartered to Wesley Church.
