Most important is that they will be there.
Morning dew on grassy meadows will show a darker color when anything
moves across it.
Broken cobwebs are a good sign , especially when the morning dew is
shining in the sun.
Rocky country can be a little tricky. Remember to use the rule of least
resistance. Look for a different shade of rock color. This will mean that
the rock has been overturned. There also might be dirt showing on a rock
which logically can't be unless it was overturned.
Sometimes you may find occasional scuff marks from a boot
or even crushed bugs.
Leaves on the ground can be simple. Look for a difference in color.
Dry leaves will be cracked from foot pressure.
Leaves that are laying upwards will bleach from the light, and when
walked on, will sometimes turn over showing a darker underside.
When man or beast moves through low brush, leaves will twist so that the
lighter underside will be visible. This contrast in color will be very
visible when you are looking for it.
