OKEFENOKEE SWAMP PICTURES

I've made several trips to the Swamp and have paddled a canoe over 200 miles along the trails.
Each trip is unique as the Swamp presents a different face every time. The variety of
wildlife is incredible and you haven't lived until you have been awakened at night by an
alligator bellowing it's mating call or seeing an alligator sunning himself on the same
platform that you are supposed to spend the night on! Or surprising and being surprised
by a flock of Florida Sandhill Cranes that suddenly takes wing with their distinctive call.

SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE OKEFENOKEE SWAMP
1. The water is murky.....NOT TRUE! You can easily see to the bottom as you are paddling along. The water is the color of tea from the tannic acid in the peat which makes up the floor of most of the Swamp.
2. The Swamp is full of snakes...while it is true that many different species of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes inhabit the Okefenokee Swamp, the old adage that they are more afraid of you than you are of them is mostly true. They know where the people go and avoid those areas. That's why even the most seasoned Swamp travellers rarely see a snake. In my 213 miles there I have seen only one.
3. The insects will eat you up....I have only gone in the early spring and later fall to avoid the worst of the mosquitos. They have never been that bad, but I would bring bug repellant on any trip at any time of the year.
