Each NFL team plays 16 games; 6 home & away vs. teams from their own division; 4 vs. each team in another division within the conference, on a rotating basis; 4 vs. each team from a division from the other conference on a rotating basis; 2 other teams within the same conference that finished in the same place but not already designated as an opponent. This little formula was designed to ensure that each team plays every other club in its conference at least once every three years, at home at least once every six years and that they play every club in the opposite conference once every four years, at home once every eight years.
