These tips are from Larry Olsen's book titled Outdoor Survival Skills.
This book tells you how to live off the land with nothing but primitive
tools made from stone and bone, how to make traps, bows and arrows, shelters
and although alot of the survival recipes don't appear to be too palatable
they will keep you alive.
The object of this page is to give you information that could prove
to be invaluable in times of emergency, Anyone who thinks that because
they have read this book or have read my weekly tips from this book that
they can go out in the bush with nothing and easily survive is a fool and
I wish them luck. The primitive land is a harsh and sometimes violent place
and to be honest without proper training and alot of practice the odds
of you making it are slim.
This summer I plan on trying some of these recipes and survival skills
but this doesn't mean I'm foolish, I will be bringing plenty of food and
water and a good first aid kit with me. As I try these different survival
skills I'll be sure to let you know how it went good or bad, as for the
recipes well I'm sure they won't taste too good but it's good to know just
in case, as I tend to like to go on 4 or 5 day long canoe trips alone.
So far the best thing I've found for long canoe trips are M.R.E.'s Meals
Ready to Eat (military rations) these are very high in calories that translates
into energy which is something you need when going on a long trip, also
they are sealed in plastic so you can dump them in the river or lake pull
them out open it and eat it. They come with a heating pack all you do is
place the food pouch in the heating pouch add about an ounce of water and
let it sit for a minute or 2 and there you have it a hot meal ready to
eat. They come with several different meals all coming with a desert ranging
from pound cake to a pouch of fruit, also some crackers, something to put
on the crackers (cheese spread, jam, peanut butter) matches, ass wipe,
gum, coffee or tea, a wetnap, sugar, coffee whitener, a spoon and probably
some other stuff I left out. they are very light and compact and have everything
you need to survive for a day. Did I mention they actually taste good?
Anyway enough about M.R.E.'s.
In the future this will be a link to
my weekly survival tips
