Rugged coast near Elk
Some extremely steep switchbacks South of Elk.
Point ArenaWe met a couple at breakfast here who were driving the coastal highway. She liked the scenery, but he was tired of the slow pace. "You twist and turn so much on this hilly route that you come back on yourself and never get anywhere." "Where did you start yesterday," I said. "Mendocino" was the answer. Funny thing is, that's where we were yesterday. We thought that was a good rate of travel - on a bike.
We had a strong tail wind past Gualala and Sea Ranch
Fort Ross, where Russian fur traders came by kayak from Alaska with Eskimo slaves to hunt Sea Otters.
Switchbacks descending to the Russian River.
Share the road sign near Tomales Bay. This road was dense with cyclists on the weekend. One or two events had them riding in both directions. Motor traffic was very cooperative, but some of the cyclists were a little inconsiderate.
A scenic view point between Stinson Beach and Muir Beach. We took Hwy 1 into Sausalito instead of going the urban route through Fairfax, etc. It was very pleasant at this early time of year, but I wouldn't do it in weekend traffic.
