A Dream Realized 50 Years Later
Here are pictures from my ride to the ocean July 29 thru Aug 3, 1999. It was 320 miles round trip. I spent 2 days at the Ocean and toured the Westport, Grayland area. Riding averaged 54 miles per day with one 70 mile day. My V-Rex with fairing worked great.
I would have smiled for the picture, but the drizzle was turning to rain, so the smile sagged a little.
When I was about 12 me and my pal wanted to ride bikes from Tacoma to the Ocean and camp out. My dad couldn't ok the ride with a clear conscience. He thought it was too risky. Now that I'm retired, I got my wife's permission to go and fulfilled a dream.
I took the ferry from Bainbridge Island to Seattle and from Seattle to Bremerton. This saved me 39 miles of riding in heavy traffic.
At Potlatch State Park on Hood Canal where I camped the first night. I carried just over 25 lbs of gear.
At the "Rusty Tractor" in Elma. I ate in retaurants and bought snacks along the way. I gained 3 lbs on the trip, but maybe it was muscle. Photo taken by Tom Reichelderfer.
Posing in Aberdeen with the Lady Washington, replica of a ship that explored Puget Sound long ago.
My destination, the coast. Ocean beach at Twin Harbors State Park.
The ocean and Willipa Bay from the cockpit of my V-Rex.
Beach and ocean from the cockpit.
On the bridge over the Wiskah River in Aberdeen.
