Kingston Beach Weekend
25 - 27 June 1999, Kingston, Ontario

Kingston the former Capital Of Canada, also the city with highest number of prisons per capita!

Well, our adventure started out with all of us (Laura, Mike, Cory, Todd, Dave) meeting at Laura Kalbuck residence at about 6:30. We left at about 7:00, Yahoo!  Okay Cory, you're the smallest so you get to sit in the middle in the back (I don't want to w/a pouting face :( ). For those of you who don't know, Laura's van has only

A picture of the Kingston harbour looking out towards Wolfe Island.

the 2 front seats and the far back bench in her minivan! We had fun singing many'o songs on the way down. Just past T.O. around Ajax, the van started to overheat in the slow moving traffic. We had to pull over an stop for about 15min.  Laura put the hazard lights on.  However turning them off turned into a problem.  The knob was missing to pull out the switch on the side of the steering column.  We were scrounging around for pins, pens, a knife, finally we had to use Cory's Multitool pliers to reach in there and pull the switch out. Then we were in traffic again and just ahead we made a pit stop at a service station....  MMMmmm Wendy's! When we arrived in
Kingston it was around 11:00pm. Wow where the heck is everyone? The place was deserted like a "Ghetto" or something?  We arrived at Lumberman's residence just before 11:30pm, man was the place warm inside. After bringing our bags inside and opening the windows we had the grand tour..... Whats that stench coming from the basement.... "OH MAN WHO LEFT THERE HOCKEY EQUIPMENT DOWN THERE!"  Wow this house is also
over 100 years old!!!! Getting board Lumberman, MOM, and Bert went for a stroll around the Queen's campus. "Okay these stairs lead down to the subway and this building was..."  I don't know how Mike remembers what these buildings are..... Let's push the emergency button and try to activate all of the blue lights across campus, he he he!!!  I guess it's kinda scary when just one block down the street there is a Federal Penitentiary! On our tour the three of us saw this weird metal sculptures that will only touch at the end of time. What building is this asks MOM, Lumberman responds oh that one is the "Morgue." MOM, "Well sorry asked".  Lumberman, "Well it's actually a medical arts bldg., but we all know it because of the Morgue in the basement!".  Here is the original four room building.  With about maybe 12-25 students who would have attend classes back then!  Over here, well down there is the subway, he he he. Well all look down the set of stairs, hey lets ride around! Ha Ha fooled ya, but it really gets though's from T.O. It's actually the under ground parking lot which takes up over half the campus. It was also built in the 1960's. Some one speaks up, hey that was during the cold war. I wonder if it was intended to double as a bomb shelter??? Any ways upon return from our brief walk-about and tour Laura was already sacked out, it was late so we all went to bed as well.

Sat Morn. we were all up around 9'ish. We went to a really good breakfast/coffee shop a few block around the corner. Man'o Man did they gave us really good severings and for about $5 a person too!!! "MIKEY what do you want," asks the waitress. MMMM Steak , Eggs and real hash-browns..... Burp scuze me!  After breakfast we wandered around the farmer's market across the street picked up a few fruits, veggies, and some other goodies. Then we stopped by the local grocery store to stock up on food for the rest of the weekend! We went back to Mike's Pad dropped the groceries off and grabbed our swim suits then took off to the beach for the day. Man was is humid and hot out.  Could someone PLEASE roll down the windows!!!!  Of course we had to have an adventure while in transit to Sandbanks Provincial Park so we took a Ferry across a bay (about 1 km.)  Laura thought her Mom would freak if she found her van was driving over water, he he...  We enjoyed a nice day

Here's the ferry we took on our way to Sandbanks Provincial Park!

at the beach. Cory and Todd started to make a sand castle, then MOM started to make a huge one!  However this back-fired when a bunch of little kiddies came over and started jumping in the big pile of sand.... Later Cory, Mike, Mom dug out a hole. Then Todd sat in it, and the rest of us buried him alive!  Say cheese! Time for a swim! Well I guess there was a high UV index that day because we all started to feel a little crispy in the van on the way back.  As well on the way back we committed our selves to the get a group together and go to the World Rover Moot in Mexico, next summer. Before crossing at the ferry, there were some kids selling chocolate bars so we bought a couple, hey it was for a good cause (our stomach!  and Tourette's Syndrome research.) When we got back everyone was really sore on the back, legs and arms. Just a wee bit sun burnt!!! We cleaned up and had good'ol hotdogs for supper. As well Mike pulled out his sandwich maker and made us a couple, hey not bad! Time to see how boredomville becomes a hip and happ'in place on a Sat. night. If it were not for the 3
Laura and Todd on the beach.
down town blocks in Kingston, one would think it was a ghost town because we hardly saw anyone till then! Our  first stop was the "Brass" WOOHOO $8.50 pitchers. Wow no wonder why there were some many people. Then it was time to open a can of Whoop-Ass at Foosball.  MOM and Lumberman Kicked some serious ass! We also met up with a couple of Mike's buddies.  Todd also had an interesting experience while running out to the store for some smokes! He gave first-aid to a man who had fallen due to a heart attack! Later we were off to another pub which was Irish.  It was kind of packed so we went across the street to another one where they supposedly have a 5 star beer called, "Dragon's Breath!"  Well we started to wonder what we were getting our
selves into when the bartender really started to pump the tap!!! It had a unique taste I will say that! We stopped for pizza on the way back to satisfy our hunger pangs and to absorb some of the beer. I don't know but Cory was acting kind of weird for some reason. I think he had a bit of a buzz. Any ways we got back around 3 and sacked out.

Woke up late the next morning. Mike went to church. while the rest of us went for brunch at Belamies. MMM wow they had lot's of stuff, but I think we showed up a little to early because they were not fully ready yet. After we were more than stuffed and Todd had finished Laura's unwanted portions we left. We headed back to Mike's pad.  Packed up, did the dishes, cleaned up and left. Oh ya Mike also got that $1000 Scouts Canada Scholarship. We had to stop and get a rear turn indicator light for the back of the van. Cory bought a pop at the Crappie Tire Gas station and got one of those free pop liners, well he used it and got an other pop and an other pop..... What luck I say! Well then we were off!  Heading home after a weekend of fun and sun (burnt). We made a slight detour in Belleville. Why I can not really remember I think someone was hungry?  We stopped at Burger Kings and then we where off again. Well that was really only a 45 min detour!. We sang songs from the radio and tapes again on the way back. The rest of the trip was really uneventful.  Except when we got back, Laura's neigdog was marking his territory and almost did it on Cory's bag! Well an other road trip done, and hopefully many more to come this summer! (editor's note this is being written Aug, 5. not really any road trips done/planned since the beginning of July, hhmmm)
