Troop 170  Ely, Minnesota

Winter is the best time of year.
Our first snow falls in October and
we hope that the ice will be off
of the lakes by May.  Our winters
are long and full of snowy fun.
One of our Troop's favorite
activities is winter camping.

The Charles L Sommers High Adventure
Canoe Base is located in Ely,Minnesota.
In the summer, they outfit scout troops
for canoe trips from all over the world.
In the winter, the Northern Tier High
Adventure Base operates the Okpik
winter camping program.

Our winter camping travels take us along the lakes and portages of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.  Sleds and skis help us carry our food and gear.

This is a pile of snow that we made.
After a few hours the snow will set
and we can hollow out a sleeping area inside.
This shelter is called a quinzee.
Quinzees are just as warm as polar domes.
When we are waiting for the snow to set
we try to catch fish through the ice

This is a polar dome.
A polar dome is a snow shelter made from
a fabric mold.  Each polar dome sleeps
about three scouts.  On the coldest nights
the temperature inside stays about 32 degrees above zero.
It might be 20 or 30 degrees BELOW zero outside!
