MAY 27, 1998

Round reef, Crib reef, and the Area 2 "D" Can were major stops recently. Lots of Walleye on bottom bouncers and weight forward lures. Near Rattlesnake Island was loaded with boats after a few fast limit catches were taken last weekend. I can't resist a little bit of sarcastic feedback when I continue to hear about all of these people with 25 years of guide experience! Lets see that would put me at 14 years of age swimming in the middle of the mouth of the Toussaint River and nobody was running me over with their charter boat and before Wild Wings was around, well...By the way I saw Mayflies, yesterday...

More and more fishing and less and less on-line but thats good I guess. West of the Marina (Wild Wings) including NW of West Sister Island, A can, and L can were all productive. A little slow down due to lack of wind. Other than that lots of Walleye from bottom bouncers and weight forwards. Try getting away from the large packs of moving boats, that boat pressure makes a big difference. Good Fishing

Hello again after a short break, actually alot of fishing and NOT alot of computer time. The Cone Reef has been producing for over a week now (Capt Dan's fav) on draggers with worms. Use a bottom bouncer with a 36 in lead to two number 2 hooks, attach a single nightcrawler to both hooks, just to cover the hooks and then drag it. You can either hold it or drop it into a rod holder and then watch the tip sort of like trolling sideways. It may not be sporty enough for you but it will outfish your weight forward lure all of the time. Anyway, just East or West of the reef in 22 to 27 foot of water on long drifts and get the net ready as soon as you SET THE HOOK!

Fishing was as good as ever this past weekend starting on Friday, right out in front of Wild Wings, not great but good. In 14-18 foot of water with yellow hair 5/8 oz jigs tipped with minnows, just dragging them or jig slightly off the bottom. Then Friday late, on 2X2 the East side, drifting North to South, on blades. I saw Capt Bob catch 6 or 7 in a row this way, right off the bottom. Saturday was a good Day, starting on 2X2, same deal, until the boats loaded up then later in the afternoon, Turtle Island Reef. Jigs tipped with worms were doing very well. Sunday the East wind blew very hard and We went home

April 20, 1998

Fishing was alot better but the water was not clear. Still working the reefs, if you can get there early, you will do better Include the deeper reefs now, like Little Pickeral. Some Walleye were caught using worms and so it won't be long before minnows are put aside, good thing they are scarce. Blades were best Saturday and then jigs/minnows on Sunday. Also right on the shore by Turtle Creek with the offshore wind on Saturday.

April 13, 1998

A flood allowed the Lake to look like the River all the way out to the Reefs. Niagara Reef was again the center of attention because of it's somewhat clear water. Cone and 2X2 were also producing but had that mud puddle look with alot of floating wood. Really bad. Blades are still prominent, if I would NOT pull on them so hard! Captain Dan had the story of the weekend, He had a BIG fish on and it ran from the front of the boat toward the back getting into everyone's lines, allowing them to think they had hits and so they pulled and pulled until Dan's fish got away. What he ended up with was a couple of lures, fishing line, and one very large scale. Our best guess? Maybe a Carp or Buffalo. See you next week

April 7, 1998

Friday was a good first day as alot of walleye were caught in clear water on the Crib reef. Jigs tipped with shiner minnows and Cicada blades were the lures and will continue to be for a month or so. Regardless of how many times you take a trip out in the boat, the first time each year is always nice! Saturday the wind blew and left things muddy for Sunday but we went out and made most of our catches on Niagara reef (clear water).

Ohio HB203 allows for a one day fishing license this year, the cost is $7.00. According to the State of Ohio the Walleye harvest for 97 was about half of the 96 harvest! I'm sure we can do alot better this year. Trips coming up, I will let you know how we do

A couple notes for you - Davis-Besse is planning a shutdown this Spring, which will take away a good wind indicator for a couple of months - If you get here by the Ohio Turnpike they are changing the signs for exits so now Exit 5 will be Exit 72 and Exit 6 will be Exit 93 and so forth to match the actual mile posts - less than a month to go for you hearty souls! The ODNR reports that some Walleye are being taken on jigs in the Sandusky and Maumee Rivers in about 38-40 degrees water temperature. BRRRR!

February 23, 1998

Looks like there wont be any ice fishing on Lake Erie this year. They are calling for 50s towards the weekend and April is about a month away. Capt Bob tells me the Walleye trips are scheduled to start at the end of March, weather depending!

Check back to this page weekly and I will tell you where and how concerning those big Spring Walleyes in the Western basin of Lake Erie

You need a slow down method with those heavy winds. Last year I saw a 21 foot Sportcraft from IL with two socks out pulling them down to a crawl and they caught 5 nice fish as I whisked on by. Some people even anchored but I would resist that if you are fishing in a group of drifting boats. Pray for clear water and no wind this Spring

God Bless and check back
