Description

A weedy low water reef mark that can produce large cod in the winter for the dedicated angler. Tends to be a bit of an all-or-nothing mark. A second reef is uncovered and accessible for the last 2 hours of a spring tide. Travel as light as possible, as it's a fair walk (15/20 mins) from the car to the waterline.

All the reefs are totally covered with water for a couple of hours on anything over a 9.5m tide, so take extra care during the flood.

Fishing Methods and Baits

There are two ways of fishing Black Rock.

a. Cast a large bait on a pulley rig into the gullies just ahead of you during the ebb tide, then at low water, cast out onto the tubeworm beds (coral)

b. Ease down the L/H side of the reef on the dropping tide, casting out on to soft mud, then cast out onto the coral at low water.

Best baits are rag/lug and crab for winter cod. A whole calimari squid is also worth a try, as it resists the crabs for a bit longer than worm.

Rag/lug and crab are the spring/summer baits for the other species.

Best Tides

Anything over 11.5m, in order to uncover the second reef properly.

Common Species

Winter - cod, whiting,

Summer - thornbacks, eels, bass

Directions

From Junction 20 M5 drop down to roundabout. Take the first exit (left) and follow the 'ring road' all the way through the housing estates. Turn left into Old Church Road and drive down to the end (by the Churchyard) Walk down to the shore/harbour, and follow it round left, over the sluice gate. Follow the path through the golf course to a gate on the foreshore. Black Rock is now in front of you.
