Clevedon Pier

Description

A Victorian pier approx 300yds long, jutting out into the Bristol Channel.

It's predominately a winter venue, as huge shoals of whiting appear between October and January and it seems almost impossible not to catch them J

The pier can be fished at almost all states and heights of tide, but most of the spans dry out on spring tides. Beware - the tide race on an ebbing spring tide is pretty fierce!!!!!!!!

Fishing is allowed along the full length of the main spans for day ticket holders, but fishing from the pierhead is restricted to CPSAC members only (see Additional Information)

Fishing Methods and Baits

A simple running ledger with one hook, or a wishbone, is very successful when fished either up or down tide. Paternosters, bombers, or flapping rigs can be useful when fished uptide, but not down. A minimum of 5oz (150g) lead is needed, with 6oz (175g) being necessary on spring tides.

Best baits are rag, lug, mackerel and squid either singly or cocktails. Peeler crab will catch but not enough to warrant the cost.

Best Tides

Ideal tides are anything under 11.5m (local).

Common Species

Winter - cod, huge shoals of whiting, small pouting, dabs (after Xmas)

Spring - as above, plus thornback ray and dogfish

Summer - dogfish, pout, sole, occasional small turbot and bass
