FIRST GENERATION 1. Ezekiel SUBER. Ezekiel SUBER had the following child: +2 i. John Michael SUBER. SECOND GENERATION 2. John Michael SUBER was born in 1710 in Baiertal, Germany. He died after 1772 in Newberry County, South Carolina. John Michael Suber (also written Saeber, Schover, Souber, Zuber) arrived at Charlestown, SC on board the ship CUNLIF in September 1752 with some 500 other German passengers. With him were three of his children: Elizabeth, 10; Hans Bjorg (listed as Hans Erick in Council Journal immigration record), 9; and Conrad, 3. John Michael made petition for a land grant to the Council at Charlestown for 200 acres (50 acres per family member). Elizabeth Miller (also written Millerin -- the "in" denoting female), also a passenger on the CUNLIF with her son Hans Michael, 5, made petition for a 100 acre grant adjacent to John Michael's. Colonial plats describe the land as lying in the fork between Broad River and Saludy (Saluda) River on Second Creek. John Michael Suber and third wife Elizabeth Millerin lived in the Broad River section between Second Creek and Heller's Creek. He was granted two other tracts of land, one of 250 acres (1769) and another 150 acres (1772). He and Elizabeth are believed to be buried in Suber Cemetery #4 located on the 100 acre survey of 1753 on Hellers Creek. There, a number of the gravesites are marked by uninscribed fieldstones. He was married to Anna Marie WITTMAN on 26 Aug 1738 in Leimen, Germany. Anna Marie WITTMAN was born in 1712 in Leimen, Germany. She died in Feb 1748. 7. Conrad ZUBER was born in 1749 and baptized 8 Oct, 1749 in Leimen, Germany. He died in May 1814 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He served with the SC Militia in the American Revolution as a member of Water's Regiment and was present at the fall of Charlestown. He and his family lived on Broad River just below Ashford's Ferry. He was a farmer. He and Lucy were buried in the Suber Graveyard #2, 15 miles Northeast of Newberry, on land he bought from his father and passed from him to several generations of relatives, many of whom are also buried there. He was married to Lucy WICKER.
Lucy WICKER was born in 1757. She died in 1814 in Newberry County, South Carolina. Lucy was a daughter of Matthias Wicker and his second wife. Matthias arrived at Charlestown, SC in September, 1752 aboard the ship Upton, from Germany. Conrad ZUBER and Lucy WICKER had the following children: 17 i. Elizabeth SUBER. 18 ii. David SUBER. 19 iii. In the 1850 census, Samuel was listed as a 22 year old male, farmer, with real property worth $800. He was married to Louisa Melvin CROOKS. Louisa Melvin CROOKS was born on 31 Mar 1825. She died on 4 Sep 1902. She was buried in Crooks-Suber Cemetery. She was a daughter of John A. Crooks and Jane__. Her second marriage was to James Madison Suber (also his second marriage). EIGHTH GENERATION 84. John Samuel Jefferson, Jr. (Jeff, Jack) SUBER was born on 24 Jan 1882 in Maybinton, S.C.. He died on 13 Jun 1957 in Newberry County, S.C.. Jeff grew up in Pomaria, SC. After they married, he and Sadie first lived in a log house in Pomaria. They later lived in Strother close to Broad River in Fairfield County. Around 1937 or 38, the family moved to Hunt Street in Newberry, SC for better schools for the children. Later, they moved back to Pomaria in a house which stood next to the log house where they first lived. He worked as a storekeeper in Strother and a mail carrier. He had diabetes and died as the result of a heart attack. He is buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery, Pomaria, SC He was married to Sara Elizabeth (Sadie) RABB (daughter of Dr. Charles (Charlie) RABB and Sara Elizabeth MAYO) on 5 Jan 1908. Sara Elizabeth (Sadie) RABB was born on 11 Aug 1888 in Fairfield, S.C. She died on 21 Nov 1976 in Newberry, S.C.. Sadie grew up in Fairfield County. After her marriage, she lived in Pomaria, Strother, Newberry, and then Pomaria again. Sadie worked as the post mistress in Strother and as a storekeeper. She is buried at Mt. NINTH GENERATION 95. Henry Jefferson SUBER was born on 22 Nov 1908 in Strother, Fairfield County, South Carolina. He died on 6 Dec 1952 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He was buried in Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Newberry Co. SC. Henry grew up in Strother and Newberry, SC. He graduated from Newberry High School. He worked as a store owner/operator on SC Highway 34. His death was due to drowning as a result of a boating accident. He was married to Lula Bess (Bess) GILLIAM on 30 Dec 1932. Her death was possibly due to a liver disease. She was married to George Dennis WAY on 6 Sep 1936. 98. Dorothy Helen (Dolly) SUBER was born on 1 Aug 1915 in Fairfield County, South Carolina. Dorothy was born in Fairfield Co., SC and grew up in Strother and Newberry. She graduated from Newberry High School. After her marriage she lived in Newberry and Pomaria. She also lived in Pueblo, Colorado for a year while Virgil was in service, in Jacksonville, Fla. for many years, and in Lake City, Fla. She worked as manager of a clothing store, window dresser, and a doughnut maker. She was married to Virgil Osborne GOREE (son of Osborne Sidney GOREE and Nora CONNELLEY) on 20 Feb 1935. Virgil Osborne (Virgil) GOREE was born on 23 Jan 1912 in Newberry Co., SC. He died on 6 Aug 1997 in Lake City, Florida. Virgil grew up in Newberry. He served in the US Army and in World War II. He worked as a doughnut maker while living in Pomaria, SC and as a railway mail clerk for many years. Dorothy Helen SUBER and Virgil Osborne GOREE had the following children: +117 i. Joan Marie GOREE. 99. Martha Allie (Allie) SUBER was born on 26 Sep 1917 in Fairfield County, South Carolina. She died on 7 Nov 1997 in Cumming, Georgia. Allie grew up in Strother and Newberry, South Carolina. She graduated from Newberry High School in 1935. She graduated from nursing school at Columbia Hospital in Columbia, SC. in 1937. There she met Harry when he was hospitalized for an appendectomy. She continued to work in Columbia at the Providence Hospital and moved with the family to Atlanta in 1956. There she worked as a private duty nurse at Piedmont Hospital. She had diabetes. She moved to Cumming, Forsyth Co., Georgia in 1982. She died of congestive heart failure. She was cremated. She was married to Harry Henderson CLELAND (son of William Pinckney (WP, Will) CLELAND and Olive Christine BOLT) on 25 Aug 1940. Harry Henderson CLELAND was born on 7 Jun 1914 in Westminster, South Carolina. He died on 18 Oct 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Westminster High School in 1932. He attended Appalachian State College for one year. He worked as a sales representative for a number of paint companies in Columbia. He founded and owned Cleland Construction Company in Columbia, SC. Later he worked for Harbor Plywood Company and moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia in 1956 when transferred by the company. In Atlanta Harry worked in carpentry and also held sales positions, the last being with Shedd Brown, Inc. His death was due to cancer. He was cremated and his ashes were spread in the rose garden at Mt. Harmony Cemetery and Crematory on the Bankhead Highway in Atlanta, Georgia.
