Make your own turkey call
Materials needed
1, 3 inch diameter, 2 inch high piece of PVC piping
1, 3 inch diameter, 1/8 - 1/16 inch thick piece of slate
1, tube of liquid nails or silicone glue
1, dry, shelled corncob about 6 inches long
1, 8 inch long, 3/8 inch thick dowell whittled to a point and glued into cob
Tinsnips
Sandpaper
Steps
1. Cut out a workable piece of slate say 8 by 12 inches. This should be about 1/8 inch thick. If you have to trim to width turn the piece on end, using a old knife and a hammer trim to width.( Don't worry slate shears cleanly )
2. To grind smooth, wet a section of the sidewalk, then work the slate across in circular motions. Finish the surface with a piece of sandpaper until it is totally smooth.
3. Now take the piece of PVC piping and trace it's outline onto the slate. Trim the slate with a pair of tinsnips and glue it to the PVC piping.
4. Cut a dowell 8 inches long, 3/8 inch wide out of cedar, walnut or hickory, push this deep into the core of the corncob. If it doesn't fit snugly add some wood glue. ( Remember your dowell and cob need to vibrate well together so make sure the dowell is snug )
5. Now time to paint the call to your likings. ( DO NOT PAINT THE SLATE ) After the paint dries play with the call and make ajustments, find sweet spots, and there ya have it ya just made yourself a turkey call.
