Brown Trout

Let's all welcome Mr. Salmo trutta

The Brown Trout is one of the hardest fish to catch here in Alberta. If you want to increase your chances use the fly-rod. These beautiful trout are most likly to go for a dry fly sitting on top of the water, rather than a spoon drifting down a river. The patterns of choise would be: Tom Thumb, mosquitoes, muddlers, and may flies. If your going to try them on a spinning reel, use a Rappala Minnow or a Wedding Band with a minnow or worm on the end. Most of the Brown Trout to be found in Alberta will be taken out of small streams, but don't forget the world known Bow River where Trophy Browns can be taken right near city center.

When fishing in a stream for Browns, fish upstream, Browns sit in little pockets with their nose pointed upstream where the food comes from. They lie beneath grassy overhangs of the bank, under fallen logs, or behind large rocks. Although these are the most common ways and places to catch the Brown Trout, my friend Frank Bosemeyer could probably tell you different. So far the spring of '97 has produced nothing but nibbles for me while he's brought in 2 beautifull browns using minnows. One was in the shaddows of a large rock, other wide open space. With the Brown all you can do is try your luck, and catch them anyway you can.
